Have you ever had your fuel injectors cleaned? Not with injector cleaner or Sea foam either. Real professional sonic cleaning. 20+ years of dirt/crud can easily clog the tip. Not to mention what ethanol can do to fuel hoses not designed for it.
Nope, but it’s a good idea. I’ll put it on the list. What I really need is a diagnostic reader to check what the actual Whipple tune looks like.
Just be aware that often times 1 or maybe even 2 injectors might not be serviceable. What I mean is you might need to buy another injector if it doesn't come within a certain percentage of flow with the others.

Depending on the size I may have a spare set out in the shop. If my rabbit hole search for 300rpm takes me to the fuel system I’ll have them bench flowed and rebuild the bad ones. If I can get it to hold 1800 rpm to set base timing I think it will turn faster. I’m guessing I’m a couple degrees retarded but the timing light is basically useless if I can’t hold RPM. We’ll see how the ICV and throttle body look when I pull it apart to clean.

If you want to clean the injectors, I got a guy in TX. I'm considering sending down mine out of the 496's in the 360. He does tons of ECM repairs as well.

Thanks Smokes, why you need yours cleaned? 360 giving you problems?

I'm wondering if you not being able to hold 1800 RPM has something to do with the fuel injectors being dirty? Were you able to hold RPM before the Whipple tune?
I've read this whole thread and am very interested in seeing your results. I was looking into this before and wondering if this might work for me. Very similar engine in the same boat.
Have you considered a new fuel pressure regulator? The Hardin Marine upgrade was a flame arrestor, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and a ECM re-flash.

Just thinking out loud here. What flame arrestor do you have? The large SS mesh one that says EFI, or is it the flat/flush one that looks like a car radiator?
Only reason I ask is the large mesh one (gen 5 I believe) is the best flowing FA available from the test I saw. The newer style FA (flat/flush radiator looking) was a bit restrictive. Not going to get more top end if she can't breathe.
Just throwing out ideas.

Yeah, I saw the Hardon marine setup, and the AS&M kit came with MSD ignition and a K&N FA.. This is what mine has, plan is to give it a real good clean when I do the TB. If it’s too nasty I’ll get the adapter to run the K&N, though I’ve never been a K&N fan there doesn’t seem to be many other options out there.
As for the idle issue, it did it with both ECUs so I’m not calling the Whipple tune bad yet.
Stay tuned, heading out to service the lower unit and pull the TB off for inspection. Pics to follow.

Nah, just preventative maintenance is all I was considering. I finally get to spend some time on it this coming weekend. Moving it from the 8MM up to our place at the 41MM.

Okay, lots of pics. If I had to use one word to describe it all, that word is DIRTY! Taking my time on this and cleaning everything before it goes back together. The detailer got the bilge super clean, which just highlights how filthy the engine is in general, so I’ll use this down time to clean as much as possible while it’s torn down.

So as you can see I have a LOT of cleaning to do while I wait for the rest of my parts to come in. I’m replacing the impeller as well, so I can clean all that up too.

Haha, yeah the bilge was pretty nasty when we bought the boat, and each year my detailer gets it a little better. This year he got it maybe 80% of what I want, so next spring it should be where I want it.
Side question A7, can you change the name of this thread to say 454 instead of 7.4? I can’t seem to do it myself.

Roger that....and thread title changed. Technically it bothered me too.
