Boatmate says they custom build their boat trailers so a trailer built for an R5 doesn't fit an R3 (I assume that means without some modifications). If you move the winch stand back for the R3, do you upset the balance of the trailer? I don't have the experience to know that.

As to the windlass, its an option I contemplate as I get older (62 now). I guess it depends on how often you set an anchor. We seem to motor a mile or two down the coast of our lake in the late afternoon, drop a hook and hang out for an hour or two, maybe do some skiing and then hang out a bit more on anchor. Sometimes as I'm leaning over the bow stretching to retrieve the muddy anchor, clean it off while trying not to drop mud on the upholstery or bang it agains the hull of the boat, I think about a windlass. Its an expensive option though. I know many people go out boating and never anchor, so a bit of a waste of money.

Motivating me to move up to an R6 is the availability of a windlass option and head. Both are options most people wouldn't care about, but I think it would add to our enjoyment of the boat.

I get boatmate builds the trailer per boat. Makes sense. I'm thinking more universal trailer. Maybe Excalibur? Yes the weight messing with the balance. As I hear you won't be pulling very often. I can get Past that. You will be fine. You will have the r3 this summer. Which the way is going for what 2 months. Maybe we could look for a trailer manufacturer that makes adjustable bunk brackets vs ones that are not welded in place. That way if Cobalt moves the chines and changes the deadrise you can use that trailer from a R5 to r6. I get the winless. If I boated on trl all the time I wouldn't get it. I pulled up Yt and tgrace98 anchor and it wasn't a big deal. Now on my lakes it's max 20 feet deep but it's twice as much work as the 150 ft at TRL because you're pulling up 29 extra pounds of muck. So I get it. My kids are helping now and I cringe when they do it because I know they're is a chance it's going to hit the hull or they will put it on the seat. If I do it I don't have to worry about it. So that's the Larger issue vs anything winless. If it's a R5 or r6 you have to make that call before worrying about a trailer.

Always get the windlass. Previous boat, after a weekend anchored downtown Nashville. We hooked a 19.5 Cumberland river roundfish. Usually travel in packs of 18. (I'm on the bridge, describing the one that got away!)

But in all seriousness, Bigger boats = bigger anchors, heavier chain, more mud. A windlass is nice. Especially with a whole bunch of chain, depending on the location/environment one can just drop a lunch hook by making a big pile of chain on the bottom and let that hold instead of actually setting the anchor.

Given that I don't know what I'll be doing for a boat next year - moving up to the R6 or staying put, I'm thinking I'll just let the dealer drop my boat in the stare again and pick it up in the fall. In the mean time, as soon as the R6 is available for a water test - and we don't have to social distance, I'll take one out on the water. Then if I decide to move forward, I'll work a trailer into the deal (somehow).

Look at Loadmaster Trailers. I highly recommend them! They build a high quality custom trailer and they are great people to work with through the build & customization process. They are built in Port Clinton Ohio. I had one built in January for my R5. The trailers are fully welded but the bunks are adjustable. There are 8 cross members, you won’t find that on any other cookie cutter trailer. They spec’ed it out with 2- 6000lb axels and load range E tires. I sleep better knowing that my trailer is overbuilt! Most trailers are built to just barely carry the weight of a boat leaving barely any extra weight capacity. I could basically carry my R5 with an R3 on top of it to max out my GVWR of the trailer!

I doubt you will be able to build a trailer for an R3 that will accommodate an R5 or R6 but it is probably feasible to get a trailer for an R5 that will be adjustable to fit an R6 if the bunks are adjustable. It might be possible but I’m just not sure. Just ask them at Loadmaster and they will tell you. They sure didn’t say no to any of my crazy requests! Lol! I included a couple pictures of my trailer from Loadmaster but I don’t have any pictures of my R5 sitting on it yet.. Sorry but it’s been at my dealer since early March getting some work done to the boat. With all of this Covid 19 crap going on it’s hard to get anything done now, (know they are doing their best to get it done). I will be getting it home soon I would expect and I will get more pictures up soon!
