Chartplotter - 2011 242
Re: Chartplotter - 2011 242
My boat is coming out of the water on Jan 5th along with other "Top Secret" upgrades I'm having the SIMRAD GO5 Mounted in the cubby hole location to right of the helm as shown in my earlier photos in this post.
Like some other members I hate holding the Navionics app on my phone and it is hard to see. Hoping this location and device is a better option.
Not going with any transducer, just the chart plotter. The current depth indicator on the dash works for me.

The boat is great. It’s a Cobalt! Thanks for asking.Big Block Power wrote: Wed Dec 13, 2017 6:18 pm Sorry little side track. Colin how's the new boat. Good to hear from you.![]()
We had zero issues with it this summer. With proper maintenance I expect our 212 will be very reliable for many years. But I’ve already got 3 foot-itis — a 242 would be perfect for the lakes we boat on. Not gonna do it for summer 2018, but will be looking in advance for 2019...
While the weather gods didn’t give us much sunshine this summer, we had a pretty good season. September was fantastic.
The boat is now tucked away in heated storage for the winter, so it’s ‘upgrade research and planning’ season. The chartplotter is pretty high on the list. Where we boat there are a lot of islands and figuring out your route home in the evening can be a bit tricky.
Happy Holidays! I like the festive avatar Santa Big Block!

I think I have decided that I am going to take something like a seasucker mount and mount mine to the windshield when going on trips and then take it down when not in use. Just because I really can't find a great place to mount one.

I looked at the RAM mounts. Pretty robust, but I didn’t have the room.

Can you get one that mounts to the windshield brackets?

RAM mounts makes a clamp on, not 100% it is the right size for the top of the windshield.

You can get a mount from seasucker and make a mount for windshield. In just can't figure out which dang chartplotter to get

Re: Chartplotter - 2011 242
I went with the SIMRAD GO5 due to the mounting location. Needed the smallest footprint possible. The GO5 has no knobs, everything operates thru the touch screen. Would have rather had the GO7, but it is too big for the location.juddmyers wrote: Thu Dec 14, 2017 8:37 pm You can get a mount from seasucker and make a mount for windshield. There’s no doubt IMO that Garmin is the leader in the field for chartplotters, but I’ve owned a number of their devices and didn’t care for the interface. Too many screens to go thru to get what you want.

I agree Driller. Garmin leads the pack, but I can't stand 'em. I've bought two different GPS's for my motorcycle adventure travels that are specific to the purpose. High dollar units but totally different mounts and cables. Then to be told a year later they are discontinued and they no longer service, fix or sell parts for them. The last one I got.. I asked all the questions and was assured I could get it fixed or replaced. Sure enough the warranty ran out and it acts up. Then I find they no longer sell that particular model but I can upgrade. Yeah right. Been there, done that.
That being said, the interface and usability is the best. I have several Garmins, and typically they work real good. But I'm interested in how your new unit turns out.

Now you're talkin' my language. Pretty soon you'll have a stealth Cobalt.
Lookin' forward to lots of pics and descriptions, Driller. Very cool.

I am still looking at these. I really like the simrad units but I can buy a garmin at a pretty good discount. Still haven't determined mounting location.

Had the SIMRAD Go5 mounted in the cubby hole position. I will get some pics of it working after I get my boat back from mechanical.
