You don't have to spend $50,000+ for a diesel tow vehicle or even $30,000 for used. Three and a half years ago I bought a 2006 Ford F250 Super Duty Lariat, one-owner, with 68,000 miles for $24,500 from a Ford dealer. Leather, power & heated seats, power adj. pedals, moon roof, etc.... Yes, it has the 6.0 diesel and yes, the 6.0 has/had a bad reputation. I did quite a bit of research on the motor before buying and recommendations were that an '04 was better than an '03 and the best ones were '06 & '07. It was also recommended that buying one with NO modifications done to the motor was best. Mine was/is bone stock. Even at that I was hesitant and the dealer offered to throw in their Platinum Extended Service Plan for $1200.
Many believe the problem with the 6.0 is the head bolts as they can stretch causing head gasket failure. But the real problem is the EGR cooling system. When it fails a chain reaction occurs increasing cylinder pressure and stretching of the head bolts causing head gasket failure. Some will just change the head bolts but if the EGR oil cooler issues are not addressed the head gasket may still fail.
Three months after I bought the truck the EGR oil cooler failed and I had a $6000 bill at the dealership. But because I had the extended warranty I paid a hundred bucks. While it was apart, Ford had them make several additional upgrades all at their expense. The truck has been very dependable and now has 104,000 miles.
The 6.0 is really a great motor with really good power and decent fuel economy. The '06 & '07 F250s with the 6.0 are actually making a resurgence in popularity and values are increasing. There are some out there with less than 100,000 miles and have had the engine work done. (bullet-proofed. You just have to look for them, do your research and keep an open mind.

I've towed boats from 200 to 15,000 pounds over the years. I'd follow the manufacturer's recommendations for several reasons: 1). they work 2). Liability. If you wreck and are towing more than capacity you've got an insurance problem for sure, and maybe a problem with the law.
Towing capacities not just a function of horsepower/torque. Frame strength and geometry, braking capacity, and vehicle suspension all figure into the equation. My take, if you are going to tow, get a trailer and vehicle that fit your boat. Alternatively, rent an adequate vehicle of use a marine hauler.

Well yeah - the American Flag graphics add at least 500hp/600ft/lbs of torque. My wife has always love Range Rovers and with the new R5 Surf we needed a tow vehicle. We wound up with a Range Rover with the TD6 engine. 7,740 towing capacity, 443 ft/lbs of torque at 1700 rpm’s and we are averaging 25 mpg in mixed driving. I may pull the R5 all the way to Florida for the winter next year.

Will it seat eight with fold flat seats?
