Mean Bean, My 262 buying adventure

Low compression doesn’t mean the engine needs to be replaced . As long as it’s above 100psi across all cylinders and all cylinders are working 10% of each other it will run fine. Even if it had low compression most of the time the issue is in the heads, not the rings, which again wouldn’t require a new engine for $10k...

That series usually test to 140-155 when healthy. Cam design along with CC volumn gets those readings. If a a true cylinder leak down was done to determine if it was above 20% and where it was actually escaping then you would have an idea of what the repairs would be.

Marine thinking is different due to water reversion issues so who knows what or how they diagnosed it??

But I still dont see how someone could run a compression check and determine it needs a new motor, and another guy do the same thing and determine it doesn't, unless one of them doesn't know what they're doing or using faulty equipment or methods?

Good for you Samuri, and here to hoping it works out for you! It should either way, because you saved the coin on the buy to RR the motor if needed. If you had a mechanic and surveyor tell you it needed a motor, then you did what you're supposed to in the negotiations, and that's not on you if it turns out the other way.

If Shumaker can fab it let then turn them loose. It's only a bent little rod with a crosspiece on top and a flatbed hole in the middle to bolt it on. I'll try to get a picture of mine later.

You have everyone s curiosity up though. What did they see on the survey that Shumaker said was fine? Especially to the tune of $10,000? A new motor doesn't cost that much?

Schumaker is going to fabricate the entire mechanism for me for $125.00. Please let others know who might need this or if they ever break theirs that they will have the patterns, materials, and no how!

A new 8.1 installed did cost that much. Heck a used one almost costs that much. We looked. Lol
The tech and surveyor checked compression and is was very low.
Hench why they said it needed a engine. What was found I won't say or how they found it wasn't bad I won't say on the internet. In person sure. S33 up to you.

You're right on BBP. To pull, rebuild, replace, align I was looking at $10K. My rebuild would've included forged pistons, and stronger valve train to prep it for a whipple. If you're going to rebuild the 8.1, might as well beef it up i case you want to whipple it. The stock components are not strong enough to run above 5200 RPM and the extra power from the compressor upgrade. As for the engine evaluation during survey. They did a compression test, leak down, and put a scope in each cylinder. The did all the right steps, they just didn't do each step correctly is what Schumaker and I am thinking. If you PM me, I will give you all the dirt, but not in public.

Since this is my buying experience journal, I wanted to share a few other new items. As I think I mentioned before, I am documenting our boat with the coast guard. I filled out all the forms and sent them in back in December. With the government shutdown, it took three months to hear back from the coast guard. When I heard back they said I couldn't document my 262 because it was under 5 gross tons! This is not the actual weight of the boat, but a calculation of the hull displacement. Come to find out, I filled the form out incorrectly for the "D" dimension. I put the draft (39") instead of the depth, which is much greater. A 262 is over 5 feet depth, so the gross tonnage is 7 and the net is 6 tons, so I should be getting my documentation paperwork soon.

Also, as mentioned in a post by my friend A7, I bought the Mercruiser Vesselview mobile module. Mercrusier was having a killer deal and I had been waiting for it to go on sale to get one. With this module, I will be able to monitor many engine pentameters via Bluetooth to my smart phone or tablet in real time!

Lastly, I am in week 5 of an 8 week power squadron boater course. This course has been very helpful to help me learn local knowledge of the area I will be boating this year in Erie PA. That way we can have fun and be safe and cruise with my buddy A7!
