The vast Desert from above is let’s say... not representing the true beautiful landscape. Looks like an eroded lot in a new subdivision?!

It’s been a long time since I’ve been there, maybe 30 years. It is a much more beautiful reservoir than it appears from the air but I’m so used to the lakes in Minnesota like the one we are on that only varies in elevation a few inches a year. I did quite a bit of boating on the Folsom Lake and Lake Shasta reservoir in California and could never get accustomed to water levels changing sometimes several feet in a day. A real pain if you have a dock on the lake. I heard Powell was at near all time lows last fall but I’m sure this winter will fill it back to normal.

You’re right about those water levels MNLB. Powell has lost almost 100 feet of water in the last 18-20 years as it tries to keep Lake Mead at reasonable levels.
There is even talk of draining it altogether.

Another issue is the hard water. The calcium deposits can wreak havoc on outdrives as well as internals. CLR to the rescue.

When you're stuck inside and can't boat, might as well be in the shop improving the other hardware. Spent yesterday putting a set of Cragar wheels on our SS. It wasn't as easy as it looks, I had to cut the centers out of the rear wheels, and move them and dial indicate and reweld them to increase the backspace from 4 to 4.375" so the "meats" would fit.

Wow. That’s tricky welding there WL . I imagine Crager has a steel insert molded on the aluminum center , by the pic I see a protrusion of what appears to be steel ? I’m amazed and curious at the same time. Lol
Are you going to bring in the fronts or does it look ok in track width?

Yes the 427 small block sounds and runs quite well. It dyno'ed just over 560 HP and we've improved it since then with a larger carb and better intake so it's likely around 575 HP now. I've got a video around here somewhere of it idling. It's got a decent sized roller cam with some duration.

You are correct, Cragar has cast a steel flange into each spoke which serves as the welding/attachment point for the center to the rim joint. It's welded in 5 places(5 spokes) about 2.5" each. I had to carefully grind the original welds down with and angle grinder and finished up with a die grinder and cutoff wheel.

The track width is only .25 difference between the front and rear so you'd have to really be looking to see it.

Is that MIG or TIG? What shielding gas did you use? Did you consider making them 2 piece bolted wheels instead of welding? With 500+HP/TQ I'd be concerned with 5 stitch welds. Car is on point though!

It's mild steel MIG using a mixture of CO2/Argon mix. The welds are actually better than the factory ones. In fact, I was able to dial indicate the runout to less than the factory which I checked before starting. I was able to get it to .008.

No, it's got a Muncie M-20, 3.42 posi in the rear. It's just a street play toy but it will definitely light the tires in the first 3.
