Looks like some oil leaking out the lower unit / exhaust. I’m going to replace prop today in the water. Then pull boat out.

Are there seals/o-rings to look at?

I don’t think this is a leak.

I went to check the gear oil level, low and behold dipstick is seized. I try everything to get unstuck without success. Based on some internet reading I pull the four screws and remove to top case. This is what I saw:
I believe the drop in the previous post was some sort of exhaust or grease drip. We had big rains up this way and I’m speculating (praying) that it was some excess rain water missing with grease/gas/buildup.

Putting the replacement prop on if the weather holds take it for a quick spin. If the consensus is not a leak then I’ll find a used top cover and get it all working and swap out.

My thoughts are it needs tore down and gone thru. But I'm the type that doesn't like to be stranded or broke down on my time off.

looks overfull. im not familiar with the Cobras, but on the volvo penta there is a vent fill screw behind the front plastic cover. you are suppose to fill it up until it starts coming out of there. if its too full it could be putting too much pressure on the seals

Also not familiar with OMC drives here, but I did recently bang my b1 lower end up bad enough to get it replaced. There's a possibility that you busted seals on the shaft...

If the seals were busted and gear oil was leaking, wouldn’t the level look super low?

If I pull it out and go through it, that would be my boating season based on the time I have out at the lake. If it’s the right thing to do I would do it, but then my time off would be gone.

I still haven’t found someone local who is willing to service cobra outdrives.

Took her out for a longer spin today, ride was great. Steering is off .5 degrees. Meaning I’m not straight at 0, like .5. Though I’m not sure it wasn’t like that prior to “skeg adjustment”.

Next up is dual battery setup. Purchased a Perko switch, bought some cabling. I will rough fab a wooden drop box for it next to the other battery in the open space. Will wire and cable the switch up and be good to go.

I will leave enough location next to the switch for a for a solar charge controller which will be coming next. Id like to find a slick way to mount a cell panel over on that side. Im currently thinking to have a mounting system where I can put the panel on a aluminum pole when I want to use it and stow it when its not needed. I havnt found any interesting hardware systems for this yet.

I’ve been busy

I’ll post some pics of my roughed-up 2 battery system and swim platform fab. Both very amateur as I have no idea what I’m doing.

However, take a look at what I found in the shed! All parts intact and a number of the pieces don’t look like they have ever been used. The build quality of cobalt is unbelievable. I’m pretty sure all of this canvas and plastic is 35 years old.

Nice find.

Hey JAA.. Did you figure out which prop you were running? I don't have any performance data to share yet but I'm running a Mercury Vengeance 13-3/4" x 21p on my 5.7l Mercruiser/Alpha1.
