Agreed. The Great Lakes can be worse than the ocean in some respects. But the same rules apply....pick your days, use common sense and respect Mother Nature.

I have been out of sight of land....briefly....and it does cause to you to pause and think. You have to be prepared and trust your instincts and as I learn more about you guys I think you're right....some of you should just leave your boat on the trailer.

That's awesome advise nola!
I would have never known about seeing the island don't go. I think if you live on one of the coasts your beliefs are different then a inland boater.

Well, speaking of adventure, it's possible that those who come up to Buffalo this summer may get a taste of Lake Erie when the conditions are right for waves. In the summer, the lake can start out as flat as a small pond, and turn a little ferocious as A"8" will attest.
As weather changes and wind forms, 6-8' waves are normal at the Eastern end around the outer harbor. Sometimes bigger.
It's so much fun to go past the break wall on days like that and play "Deadliest Catch" in the huge swells that can form. Either busting into them and getting soaking wet, or riding on top of them and being carried towards shore where the water reminds you that your 6,000 lb boat is nothing more than a fishing line bobber on the brink of flying. You better have a good feel in your seat and go very slow. If you have a big enough boat and are not careless, its a blast. 🐳.
My wife may disagree..

Point is that while it's fun for a short few minutes, I can take an instant "pass" and opt out by simply heading into the upper Niagara River, or behind the enormous breakwall that protects the harbors in Buffalo. Im not sure I would call it safe, or nor would I want to spend any extended time playing storm-boating.
So I think I have experience in bad conditions, hence when it comes to crossing wide open and unpredictable ocean waters, the only sound I want to hear is that familiar "Ding Ding, we are making our final approach".😃🤣🤣
Now, I would be all in renting a boat in the Bahamas..👍

I think if I got into waves like that I'm afraid I'd fill the bottom of the boat with piles and piles of rabbit pellets and my sense of adventure would drain out along with things I haven't even eaten yet!
