Makes sense. We are right at 525 and for as little a we tow I just run it as is. I can say if we were closer to 700 or 750 I would be looking at a larger truck instead of dealing w/ hooking up a WDH each time we went to the ramp. That's why I have a weight distributing hitch!

It's what the hitch is rated for. May also depend on how it mounts to the frame which could be the difference. I know I looked into a higher rated hitch and it required it to be welded to the frame. My Lincoln has the HD Tow package - maybe the F-150 you quoted doesn't?

One of life's great mysteries. Every F150 is rated to 500/5000lbs weight carrying. Doesn't matter if its max tow or not, or what wheel base it is, or what bed length it is, they are all 500/5000. The weight distribution rating does vary based on truck configuration however. My Lincoln has the HD Tow package - maybe the F-150 you quoted doesn't?

If you looked at how the forces are applied to the recever with a WDH, the weight is more even across the mounting points of the hitch. Its a very highly debated topic on the F150 forums. The general thinking is Ford was too lazy to rate each truck configuration, and just slapped 500/5000 on everything. It was made even more confusing when the Ranger was rated to 750/7500. Ford Marketing also loves to post up videos of shiny new F150's towing 27ft boats without weight distribution on the trailer, so yeah its an odd deal.
