2008 220 Engine Cover Lift

Post by ziffera »

Recently picked up a 2008 220 and took to get inspection done for use in Lake Tahoe. Its equipped with a power mechanism for opening the engine cover. After inspection, cover wold not close and had to disconnect to get cover down. Seems to be electric with some sort of screw drive set up. Any ideas how to repair ? Better off just changing to hydraulic list assist ?

Welcome to the forum from Wisconsin! Please go to the new member section and introduce yourself and your boat with pictures. We like specs too.We like pictures. If you swap out your power lift let me know. Also I'm not sure how they work but from what i know they are tied into your trim pump. Check your relays. More will come on with them. I think the contracts get dirty too.

BbP, you r quick on the draw with this one!

Hey ziffera, welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us!

Yes, we love pics here. How did you get interested in Cobalt boats?

Love Lake Tahoe ❤️ 💗 💕. Did some fun boating there in a prior life.

Your engine hatch is most likely powered by a Bennett hydraulic power unit (HPU). These units are a dual purpose pump & are also used to hydraulically move your trim tabs up & down on the stern of the boat (if you have that option installed...not to be confused with outdrive trim).

The good news is that this pump is extremely reliable. Rarely do they fail. ($250 pump)

First, the HPU is normally located in the stern of the engine compartment on the port or starboard side. It has a smoke colored lexan plastic cover on it. Check to make sure it has power steering fluid in it. (Look at the line on the white square tub). Btw, it only measures correctly when the hatch is closed!!! If you top it off while open, fluid will be forced out when you close the hatch making a nice mess.

The bad news, normally it’s something electrical that’s the culprit.
The good news is that looking under your dash and making sure your wires look good and are attached firmly is all that’s required—as well as checking that the circuit breaker is pushed in. Also check connections on the HPU.

My hatch recently would go up normally but would close VERY slowly. Traced it to a chafed wire under the dash & the actuation switch with dirty contacts.
After I respliced the wire and cleaned the carbon build up in the switch, she works perfectly. Very simple system.

Hope this helps.
...and again, welcome aboard mate!

Zif.

Low voltage.. low battery only allows one way on hydraulic at times.

As BB and A7 suggests test or swap some relays but put a charge or jump box on it and try again!

You have 48 hours ( holiday weekend) to get some pics and introduce yourself!

Just kidding... no he isn't
