Engine flushing

Any input helpful. Have a 2012 242 new to me that I'll be using on the Chesapeake Bay. Merc mechanic not crazy about installing merc flush kit. But he doesn't recommend the lower unit muffs and water hose either. I've looked at Super Flush System which seems an improvement though a few things ton install on engine and put a nozzle connection on the boat. I don't like that aspect either but would like to be good at giving the motor a thorough and regular rinse. How are others handling flushing. Timing? Process?

I have a Volvo in my Cobalt and haven't had a Merc for a few years, but my thoughts in general are that flushing is never bad, and has significant benefit if you're in salt or brackish water, don't have a closed-loop cooling system, or are storing the boat for several months. The Volvo has a hose attachment on the engine to do a quick flush, and I definitely see value in installing a flush kit over simply using muffs and a hose.

Mercury's kit is designed to be used with the engine off, with the drain plugs removed for a long flush (several minutes), and then a quick flush with the plugs replaced to clean out the elbows and risers. Others have moved the water fitting before the water pump so they can flush with everything closed up and the engine idling, which seems like extra hassle to me. Note it takes 5-10 minutes for the thermostat to open, but if you want to do a flush longer than this there may be some advantage to the second method.

I don't know much about the Superflush system (I think it used to be the MST Guardian), but would probably seriously consider one if I were a saltwater boater. Happy boating,

Thanks John. I spoke with the owner at SuperFlush, Doug Brogdon after I posted the note. From there I ordered one. Thought I'd bring it down to my mechanic to let him see it as I know there is interest in what this thing does. Doug told me:

Been primarily in military applications with efforts now targeted more commercial
Said my mechanic was right in that Merc flush was inadequate as are the muffs for the lower unit(which is what mechanic said)
for my 6.2L Merc Bravo III, he said it was a very simple install
Said I would absolutely love it and its results
Provide his cell phone with any additional questions from me or our mechanic
For the fact I can flush out of water or in and it does not have to be running (which is what the mechanic had a problem with) and that it looks like it will do the job, think I'm going to go ahead with it once it arrives.

Should have it in within a few more weeks and can report back then.

Flushing kits are a must have. Even in the swamps Matt and I boat in.
