Lost Fwd and Rev

Post by Mykidsdaddy »

We took our new to us 99 272 out to the lake for our first family lake day since we purchased it Saturday. I was cruising along when a strap for the bimini came loose and my son yelled at me. He more or less screamed and pointed so I yanked the control lever back and I think I went past neutral. When I saw what the problem was, I fixed it and sat back down...NO FORWARD!!! Pulled it into Reverse...Same thing~~~ We took the control stick off and watched the operation of the two cables. Throttle is working fine and so is the shifter. There is no action in the outdrive. Had to get towed in. We are home now and I pulled the cover off the outdrive and the linkage is working when I shift the lever.
So...damage is internal. Anyone know what to expect when I take it into the shop??? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ or $$$$$$$ or $$$ :D

First glad everyone made it to shore safely. Did you by chance check the other end of the cable on the motor side?

Well so much for a broken cable. I am guessing you are on the right track in that something must have broke I. The props. I am sure others with more knowledge will be able to help. 😐

Well last time I did that was quite a while back. Sheared prop pin (remember those?!) and backed off a big elephant ear 3-blade VP prop in the middle of channel then got washed to opposite shore and had to get a tow. Right outside of the marina! Ouch. I had a backup prop on board but... Sorry for such bad luck early.

The shifter housing uses a cast " Fork" to push up or in on the cone assembly. You may want to make sure he has the shifter housing unit just in case.

So about a month ago I was visiting at TRL and pulled back into a cove. When I went to shift into reverse to stop it never came out of forward. I spun the wheel hard port and gassed it hard to spin out of the tight space, then headed to a marina that has a service dept.

Mine would not come out of forward. Occasionally it might hit neutral, but pretty much just stayed in forward with no reverse.

They pulled the boat out and went to work on the outdrive. It literally took like 10 or 15 minutes to fix, and I was back in the water.

Soooo, make sure whoever is doing the work doesn't rape you. I never would have known, and they could have taken advantage of me very easily.

What they put back together was on the starboard side on the upper unit. They said I must have shifted into reverse under power, and that's exactly what happened. I had reached down to pull the throttle back and pulled the wrong lever, so I shifted back to reverse with a little throttle on.

Sounds like you did the exact same thing.

I got my boat fixed!!! Yay!!! It was in fact, the "Shear Coupling". It cost me $425.00 to get it replaced. 2.5 hrs labor and it is done!!! Not too bad~~~ I really thought I was gonna get hosed!!!
The guy that I dealt with was OUTSTANDING!!! He also saved me from buying a steeper pitched prop-set. He told me that at 5000 ft, I should be running an F6 NOT F8 props! He said my props were "Sea Level" props~~~ Told me to buy a set for here and keep my F8s for Havasu!!!
Good guy! We also talked about replacing the controls...he said the mount is called a Binnacle. Told me the one he will replace it with has a lock-out feature...won't allow it to go into reverse accidentally! Also told me the cables should be replaced at the same time. Told me approx $800 parts and labor. Doesn't sound too bad. I looked online and the controls and cable would run 500-600.
I'm happy! Now...gotta get back out to the lake!

Let us know how she runs before you $$ spend money in props. Did you get some engine pics yet? I can’t remember?
