Power steering

Pretty sure my power steering went out yesterday on my boat. I noticed a fluid in the bilge when I popped open the engine hatch. Hoping it’s just a hose or a clamp. All I know is when I’m idling or going slow it is a lot harder to turn the wheel.

Oh that sucks. The good news is those pumps can be rebuilt pretty easily. Mine started.leaking pretty bad on my 240 and I discovered a seal and bearing kit is like $50 bucks or less. It's just an automotive pump. I had already ordered a new one when my mechanic told me to sent it back. He pulled it, installed the kit and reinstalled the pump for what the new one cost.

Yeah I’m not mechanical at all. I’m an IT guy. I’m going to call the harbor tomorrow and see when they can look at it. Luckily with the duo prop small turns either way moves the boat quite a bit. Just sucks docking it.

Well did some investigating today and found a capped hose coming off the power steering pump and it had a big ole crack in it. So put a new one on and filled it up with fluid and she is good as new! 15 dollar fix!

My steering is also hard to turn at slow speeds, especially to port. I've had two different mechanics say there is nothing wrong with it.

I'll check that hose in the morning. Thanks

Jeff, to clarify mine was like that because it had sprayed the ps fluid all over the bilge. The tank was bone dry. So if you have fluid in yours. Then that’s probably not the case.

Now I just need to fly BBP down since he is an expert at cleaning the bilge. At least that’s what the rumor around here is

It must be the year BBP. This Saturday my idle steering became really stiff, a little fluid check revealed low power steering fluid, almost none. After filling it up my Dad and I kept watching the back and there is a small leak somewhere. Had to park it and head home so I'm heading down early this week to try and find the culprit. The bilge is good to go so my fix may not be so simple.

Mine ended up being a bad power steering actuator. That was not cheap to replace either.

After filling it up my Dad and I kept watching the back and there is a small leak somewhere. Had to park it and head home so I'm heading down early this week to try and find the culprit. The bilge is good to go so my fix may not be so simple.

It wouldn't surprise me if it's not the same clamp as mine. Lay okb the engine follow the par str hose to the starboard rear corner of the engine. The hose goes to the power steering cooler. If it's wet there cut the clamp off with a side cutter and put a screw clamp or 2 in its place.

I will be looking for it when I get to the dock Thursday. While the engine compartment is huge getting my 6’6” ass in and out is no fun. Thanks for the heads up BBP.

+1. Not of the 6'6" but on getting my a$$ in and out. I always think of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
