Off Season Battery Storage

I know, it's summer and I shouldn't even be talking about off season storage, but figured I would ask. Obviously Mr. Nauti posting as Katie won't admit its the end of boating season until about October.

Curious what everyone does with their batteries in the off season. We don't have access to AC power at our storage unit at the lake so just plugging them into a battery tender down there is not an option. Do you guys think its worth pulling the batteries out of the boat and then plugging them into a battery tender at the house for the off season?

On the 190 we just disconnected the battery and left it in the boat, which worked ok, and hell I think that battery lasted about 7 years. We are much harder on the batteries in the 222 though, with them often seeing 6 or 7 hours of stereo usage a day on the weekends. I mean we have the best playlists so its our job to provide music for the entire cove right?

The batteries were new when we bought the boat, so for now I just want to extend their life as much as possible, with a switch to AGM when they finally die.

What do you guys think?

Any issue /w storing them inside on a charger? The paranoid person in me worries about a small Hindenburg like hydrogen explosion. Katie would be pleased I was keeping the batteries in good shape but at the same time upset our house had burned to the ground lol.

No issues. The tenders are very smart these days. Not like the days of old. Even okay to store them on the concrete which used to be a no - no.

I take them out and keep them in the garage. Hook them to charger on occasion. I did have a new one actually go bad after this past winter. Replaced under warranty.

This fall, they will come out and get out on the charger as I always do.

I would Pull them and maintain them. A simple Low amp 1.5-3.0 amp charge is all that is required to keep them alive, and it wont build any heat or have seepage unless your not running a sealed battery. If there not sealed Batteries Id recommend no more than a 1.5 amps.

Ive used many AGM batteries on Purpose pre battery charged stuff, but you'll find that unless your pushing continuous amperage of 25 amps or more, and a threshold of 14.5 volts or more all the time, the AGM battery never really peaks or reaches a full charge. So I would just keep it simple.

I pull mine and keep in the basement. I put each one on charge about once a month and leave it on there for a couple days straight. Once an off-season I put each one through a "recondition" charge just because I can. I have no clue if it really does anything beneficial but figure it can't hurt and I have the time to do so.

If I had means of keeping the boat in heated storage with power available, they would remain in the boat on trickle charger constantly. My boat sees the worst of winter though so basically empty it at the end of the year and strip her down to the minimum to fight the winter.

If I store where power is not available I pull the batteries and put them on battery tenders in the garage. If power is available I just plug in the onboard charger.

Those with power engine hatches.. how do you get the hatch up with the batteries out? Jump box on the terminals next to the switch?

You can use the jumpers.

Or if 12v system shorts or the motor fails then the power hatch ram is connected to a swivel plate on top that allows you to manually lift the hatch up as it will hinge.

Older version had acesss ports under the rear seat to reach in the engine compartment and pull the release pin. Then open

Ah I plan on taking out my second battery and leaving my main in since I slip keep mine in the winter. And just going down there every couple weeks and charging the one I leave in the boat
