Windlass question

Post by Joe »

Do you all leave the load on your windlass after setting or do you transfer the load to a cleat in some way?

Always on the Cleat after the length is out.

For those who have all chain then get a stop installed I bump the windlass out a inch to give slack after I tie it off.

Just like drag on a fishing reel it will slip, it’s supposed to actually or you can wipe out the motor if you try to pull your boat with it

One ugly cruiser coming by putting 3 footers can bounce your bow and slip it as a result.

You’ll get in the habit , especially when it’s retrieve time and you need to untie. Then you idle up slightly to your anchor spot .

What do you mean by "get a stop installed"?

Hey Niehbor.. when you can’t use the cleat as you may have went “ all chain” the hold teather that clasps the anchor when in may not hold the load when anchored.

Either get a larger cable and clasp or a locking lever that will hold the chain. Rough water with the bow bouncing I’m not sure my 5/16 threaded end would hold.

You can just add a short 3/8 braded rope with a clasp that would take the load .

Here’s a pic of my set up. And what a chain stop looks like.

Did you covert to all chain??

Yes, I have all-chain now and that has seemed to solve my earlier problem with the line binding and slippage.

I am thinking about getting this "chain grabber," but don't know if I really need it with 30 feet of chain laying on the bottom.

Nice
Anything that takes a tugging load of your windlass. If it’s a easy on and off then it’s perfect. Looks simple enough!

I didn’t realize you couldn’t put a load on these? What if the anchor is a bit stuck? I Am glad you guys posted this.

Stuck anchors once your directly over can usually come free by going forward slooowly over the spot , and breaking it free as with any delta style anchor.

They recommend backing up oposite the spot but you may be against a area of shallow water that could make that hard.

If your running all chain you risk hurting your bow hull area. So keep an eye.

Once you determined your stuck as the windlass strains directly over the spot. Re- attached your teather ( if all chain) or tie back off to your cleat if your on the rope portion.

Anchors are cheap compared to windlass and fiberglass damage.
You’ll know when to cut her free. 😎

How do you utilize the other anchor? Sounds like something I should know? Run it down the line?

Are you referring to an anchor buoy? Or a stern anchor for keeping it in one place.

Sorry if I was confusing, if my Fortress anchor gets stuck (it’s whats on my windlass) how do I utilize a delta anchor to break it free?

The Delta.. or plow anchor is one style . The fortress is another.

Running a shear cable to the back and moving your shackel to a hole up front is one method and looks shoddy if you have an exposed windlass..

But it will pivot your anchor and pull it straight up in a emergency.

They have anchor rescues kits but I’ll just cut the line and get a new one.

Here are the two styles your talking about. There’s even a claw that formula uses.

Any one ever retro fit a windlass onto/into a boat with out one? I was at LOTO this past weekend. Lots of anchor retrieving. Luckily I packed gloves but think a windlass would make life easier.

Thanks!
