On Board Battery Charger.
On Board Battery Charger.
Installer the pro 20 on board charger. Just Checking it is ok to leave it in a covered boat over the winter.

It is. I’m actually leaving mine covered and plugged in all winter to keep the batteries charged and healthy

Re: On Board Battery Charger.
I just charge the batteries and unhook them before storage and never had an issue. I also don't have an easy way to leave on an onboard charger plugged in with it shrink wrapped in my back yard, lol.

I leave my 242 plugged in 24/7 with the cover on except when on the lake. No problems so far after 1-1/2 year.dogwspts wrote: Wed Oct 17, 2018 6:45 pm Installer the pro 20 on board charger. Just Checking it is ok to leave it in a covered boat over the winter.

I wouldn't leave my batteries in the boat outside. Take them out and give them some love in the house.akorcovelos wrote: Fri Oct 19, 2018 11:50 am I just charge the batteries and unhook them before storage and never had an issue. I know a few car guys that store thier cars over the winter and they leave batteries in the car. They tell me if the battery is good it will make it through the winter. I guess it works. I leave all my batteries in but put a battery tender on all of them.

Re: On Board Battery Charger.
been doing it that way for years without issue. I used to pull them and put them on tenders, but it made no difference in length of life. My buddy runs a battery business (golf carts) and told me to just charge, unhook, and forget and it's been working just as good as pulling and tending. Much easier too obviously.

We see plenty of cracked batteries in New cars from dead batteries. Just saying.

Re: On Board Battery Charger.
not doubting you, just never seen it myself. I typically get 3 years out of a set of group 10 batteries before they start getting weak. I don't let them go flat in the boat, but I put them aside as cores and they can sit for months dead flat.

I own A bunch of battery tenders. Best 20 bucks a person can spend. The charger option on my boat is always plugged in 24x7x365.
Google how a battery works. A battery that stays fully charged for its entire life remains much healthier and lasts longer.

Thank you T .
Yes ..a discharged battery becomes vulnerable to freezing as the balance of chemicals and water deplete. It freezes like a pale of water. A battery that’s been cycled a couple of years is even weaker in its ability to maintain the chemical balance in cold temperatures. ( not just freezing)
Hasn’t anybody ever added electrolyte and water mix ? Maybe not as new batteries are sealed and we think there magic. Lol
A maintainer or tender does NOT charge endlessly. It keeps the battery peaked once a stable charge is reached, but not heated and exhuming gasses.
Plug it in.. walk away.. And inspect periodically there are no signs of corrosion forming at the seams or posts.
