Does anyone have experience purchasing a pre-owned Cobalt in Canada and bringing it into the U.S.? Could you describe the proccess and pitfalls if any?

I saw a nice detailed explaination about buying at U.S. Cobalt and bringing it into Canada, but not the other way around.

Thanks. -Jeff

Sorry for the delayed response on this. I have some experience bringing a Cobalt and other vehicles into Canada from the US. However, not the other way around. That said, here's a link to all the relevant details per U.S. Customs & Border Protection:

Process looks pretty straight forward. Some points to note:

- You do not have to pay local taxes in Canada; in certain jurisdictions you may have to pay upfront and file a claim form, but that's straightforward too
- You will have to pay 1.5% duty and that would likely be based on the bill of sale (boat only; does not apply to trailer)
- Consider using something like TransferWise for the payment in Canadian dollars. Large dollar bank wires can get expensive as the exchange rate offered by banks is often terrible.
- You will likely need a temporary tag / license plate on the boat trailer. I'd get the seller to arrange for that -- they just get it at the local Ministry of Transportation.

This sounds like a lot, but given the potential savings it can be well worth it. In the end it's just a few phone calls and some forms.

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you need any help. I'd be happy to assist.
