Cobalt 220 Flush Dashboard Mounting a Simrad GO5 XSE – Advice Welcome

Back in 2015, when my Cobalt 220 WSS was new, there was a factory option to add a flush dashboard mounted Garmin 640 GPS (to the right of the steering wheel – replacing the plastic storage insert). The Garmin’s dimensions are 5.9"W x 4"H x 1.9"D. I want to install a Simrad GO5 XSE (also replacing the storage insert). The dimensions are 5.98”W x 4.72”H x 2.28”D.

Has anyone flush mounted a slightly larger unit into the dash of 220? Below is a photo I found on the internet of a Lowrance unit replacing the storage insert. Also below is a photo of what the stock dashboard looks like (I’ve circled the storage insert area).

What tips/tricks do you recommend to make it a successful and clean install (and running the cables)? Thanks in advance!

I can't help much but it looks like the 5 fits snug in there. Not sure you will get a 7 in that spot. I'm going to try on mine as well but I have a diff dash then yours. So let the modifying begin. You could call Cobalt and see what they say. Pass it along though. Thanks.

Yeah, I was gonna say, horrible spot to actually use it for navigation.

Mine is mounted same location in a 242. SIMRAD GO5.

I agree the location isn't the best, but it works.

After using the GO5 I wish I had gone with the GO7. I have one that I am going to replace the GO5 with, just need to get access to my boat and the time to install.

Thank you, all, for your feedback/insight. I'm now reconsidering the placement and size of the unit (and have time to contact Cobalt, directly). It will now end up being a winter project.

any updates on this?
I'm in the same boat (pun intended), so need to make this happen as well.

Same here!

Like the idea of a flush mount, but it’s really difficult to see/use in that spot. I did a ram mount on my last boat. Worked great and had a nice clean look.

I second the Ram mount idea - enabled me to wedge a 7” above the dash in my 210, which didn’t appear to have room for much of anything.

I mounted my Hook 7 on the starboard glass, but I'd like to see how you did yours above the dash. Could you share a pic?

Thanks in advance,
G

My boats still in winter storage, but I took some pics of fabbing up the mount and seem to have lost my pics of making a backing plate for the dash side. It’s on the left side of the dash anyway, wedged between the dash and windscreen.

I decided to re-mount my Hook-7 on the dash with two improvised brackets (which are just computer slot blanks) attached to the screws that hold down the metal button strip, primarily because the Ram mounts attached to the starboard glass with heavy duty double sided tape started to come off. Ram mounts are awesome, but they really need to be screwed in somewhere, which I can't do with my dash configuration. In this new position, it's easily viewed above the steering wheel and under the gauges, and it's solidly attached, so I'm pretty happy with it (for now).

I was planning to do the same, but found it interfered with the tilt wheel, looks like you have the same issue?

No, my wheel can go up without interfering, but I pretty much run with it all the way down.
