Prizm polarized sunglasses...are they worth the money?

Post by Patriot 8713 »

Hey Cobalt Chat,

I never buy expensive sunglasses, but am considering a pair now. I have a co-worker that swears by the Oakley PRIZM™ Deep Water Polarized lenses for boating on any kind of large body of water to reduce glare. Does anyone on here have them? Do they make that big of difference over regular polarized lenses?

Thanks in advance for any responses

I have prescription sunglasses with polarized lenses, and I have a pair of polarized fishing glasses, can't tell the difference between the two as far as glare goes, but the fishing glasses aren't as dark so I can see through the water surface better. I bought a pair of Oakleys once, lost them a week later and swore I'd never spend that kind of money on sunglasses again. Do the Deep Waters float?

As far as I know they do not float. I would put some kind of strap on them that would float though. They run $163 on Amazon.

yeah, make sure to get something that will float on them. My $150 Oakleys are sitting on the bottom of the lake in 'like new' condition, lesson learned.

I had a brand new set of Maui Jims fall off my head and right into the water docking on the first trip with our new boat. Needless to say...🤬🤬.
I waved a $50 bill at a bunch of kids, and one girl had them back in my hands in a minute. I got lucky...except for the fitty..🤬

I believe all polarized lenses filter glare the same way. They will mess with clarity of touch screens and other gauges, and I believe airline pilots like A7 do not wear polarized lenses for that reason.

IMO, I’m a fan of actual glass, and not plastic lenses. They wash clean and are more scratch resistant...unless of course they do a bounce off of the sidewalk... I just had my Ray-Bans do that a couple days ago.. I had to trade them in at Sunglass Hut because they were chipped pretty good. That’s never happened to me before...

I have 2 pairs of Ray-Bans that have polarized lenses. I love them. 1 pair is in my car and the other pair stays on the boat all the time.

I like them for fishing ( on the Canoe of course 🤣) as I can see fluorocarbon line easier on the water surface. Lessens reflected glare off the water.
But as our guys said it goofs up looking at certain screens and displays.

Yes - get them. Katie bought me a pair and didn't realize the different between prizm and regular polarized. She now steals them from me when we are on the lake.

They make a huge difference over regular polarized. Wouldn't go back now that I have had them if that answers your question.

I have a strap in my "boat bag" that goes on any pair of sunglasses I wear in the boat. The kind that slips on the stem part that usually goes behind the ears. It's kept them from falling a few times, and is something I'll probably always use.

.
If it helps in deciding whether to go with an expensive pair of sunglasses or with an inexpensive pair, the LARGEST house (22,000 square feet) on the Fort Lauderdale inter coastal waterway tour which we went on last week was from sunglass profits. 8-)

Price typically means value, and when you consider that you're talking about protecting your eyes from harsh sunlight, it's worth it to spend extra for quality pair of sunglasses. There is a big difference looking through a quality pair of sunglasses and a cheap one. And I've always felt that cheap sunglasses can do more harm to your eyes than good. As to dropping them in the water--yep, everyone has a story, but I always wear a leash on mine to prevent that from happening.

I have/had a pair of Randolphs (made in USA), Ray Ban, and Revo. My favorite pair of sunglass I've had were Vuarnet, which I had way back in the 80's. I'm dating myself now.

Went fishing down in the gulf and the guides were all wearing Costa sunglasses. Man once you try these watch out because that's the only brand you will want to wear. Costa's have a cooling effect on the eye balls. If you purchase go with the glass lenses the plastic scratches to easily. You won't be disappointed!
