2006 Cobalt 226 6.2 Bravo 3

Just bought the boat. It’s got 340 hours on it and ran into three issue 1st time out:

1. Speedo not working
2 trim in down position went dead. Finally figured out it was a bad connection (don’t know which one). My troubleshoot was working and juggling the wires and connectors and it worked. I heard dialectic grease helps. Has anyone ever used this?
3. Dual battery switch- power engages only on battery 2 - checked battery 1 - plenty of juice

Other than these problems I am thrilled with the boat. 1st day out some pretty good chop and the hull cut through them like they were butter!

Hello RT. Welcome to the Cobalt chat forum. So glad you found us!

Your speedo hook-up may be clogged or it popped off the outdrive (Merc). It’s common. What type engine? Merc or VP? That will help.

Which wires did you jiggle for the trim to start working? That pump is normally mounted in the stern —starboard or port corner. Check the wires leading to it. The container on which the pump is mounted has a yellow cap.

Check your connection on the one battery. Sounds like it may be slightly loose. Tighten with a 1/2” box wrench.

It’s s Mercuiser I looked at some other posts about where the speedo hole is on the outdrive but in inspection of mine only see the hole. Is there an attachment piece that is suppose to be over the hole?

The trim unit I jiggled the wires on is on the port side at the stern.

Sure!

There is a small notch in the lower front of the Merc outdrive. That’s where water is pushed into during running that pushes air via a rubber hose to the speedometer. The air pushes a rubber diaphragm which moves the speedo needle. Check that it’s not blocked at that small opening by using a paper clip.

A rubber hose connects to just above that hole (Merc only). When your outdrive is up, check to see that it’s connected right there. Usually it’s a black hose the size of a straw that has a white plastic connector....

If water is dripping under your dash then the hose came off your speedometer and the water is being pushed all the way up the hose while you are underway. (Rare)


Below is where your trim pump wires are most likely loose....on or near the pump. ..
