Anyone have an idea on why when i shift from neutral to forward there is an increasing delay for it to engage? This is a new issue this year. No delay from neutral to reverse, but up to 10 second delay in neutral to forward before prop kicks in. Is this a timing cable issue?

Welcome, and hopefully you will make it over to the new members section and show us your Cobalt! We loce pics!
So not knowing if it’s Volvo or Merc? Year and hours etc.
As the outdrive uses a cone clutch to engage in forward and reverse it becomes common as facing in the clutch wears.
This can cause a noticeable delay and be worse when warm. Mercury shifting is different from Volvo and cable adjustment should be verified first.
If everything is adjusted correctly you will be looking at a cone clutch. Sign of failure is have to rev it up to engage it. Have it look at before it leaves you.

Volvo drives are very particular on the brand of drive fluid you use. Did you use volvo branded drive lube?

Yea sounds like the come clutch. I use BG gear lube and it's been great. The Volvo oem smelled burned the first year. Bg I'm running it this year for the second year.
