Gas in my bilge?

Hi folks,

A little advice would be greatly appreciated! Overfilled the gas tank on my 2011 232. Some gas escaped through the vents however I had a little gas in the bilge. Is this normal? My understanding is that the filler system is closed. Any thoughts?

Yea you shouldn't have gotten any inside. Unless you have a loose hose clamp or a loose fitting somewhere. soak it up and get it out of there. Clean r out good.

Check the vent line for cracks.

Thanks BB, going to clean out the bilge this am. Is this something the dealer needs to look at or can my mechanic do the job?

I would think you can look and see if there are any leaks, key on powers up the fuel pump and primes the pressure side of the system.

Thanks, I have pretty decent access to the thru hulls for the vents and filler cap. Hope it’s not close to the tank side though!

Just be DANG SURE you run your blower before you start that thing, EVERY time. In fact, if I had a prior fuel leak and needed to start, I'd open the engine cover and run the blower for 4 or 5 minutes before starting. Then I'd leave the blower on until I got out at the end of the day. You just dont want to chance an explosion back there!

If your mechanic finds the leak or cracked hose that's all fine and dandy, but afterwards you'll need to pull your plug and give the entire bilge a good wash down. There are several cleaners you can use to spray in there before a rinse to remove any dirt, grease and fuel. Soak it real good then use a high pressure washer to clean it out. Then leave the plug out and hatch up to dry. Afterwards you'll have a clean bilge that is fume free!

Something else to keep in mind.. If you had any fuel floating on water and ran the boat, it's highly likely you'll have residual fumes all the way up to your ski locker. Water in the bilge can flow backwards all the way to the bow through the drains, so you may need to pull things out of storage for a good cleaning too. The main thing is getting the fumes out.... Completely!

That is great advice! You bet I won’t be starting it until I know the Bilge is spotless. I bit the bullet and bought some special sponges to soak up the gas. I’ve got bilge cleaner in there with the hatch open. Gonna pull it later today and pull the plug. Thank you Ytmsn!
