Does this make me a bad person?

Post by Tuscany »

Maybe I’m slightly horrible..
Ok, I know it was an accident by a DB irresponsibility showing off at the expense of his friends safety, but it seems they walked away with just a few bumps, but still intact.
Having said that, This still cracks me up just a little, especially when put to music..

See ya driver..
His glasses flying off is the best part...yeah, I’m horrible..

I watch this video about 10 times a year. It's crazy. I still can't believe no one got ejected in this.

It's a huge reminder of what can happen at Lake of the Ozarks with these Fountain boats a dime a dozen there. Be cautious folks.

Since I don’t know you personally, I won’t answer your question as if this post makes you a bad person. The operator is my best friend and I know all but (1) person on the boat. Definitely not a DB, no alcohol involved, participating in a Poker Run on LOTO, traveling 70 mph in a boat capable of 120+ mph, part-time “gentleman racer” hired by professional teams to drive their race boats, etc., etc.

Mis-read a wave and thus the crash. Broke his back, 2 of them had to be helicoptered out, bad deal all-around. Unfortunately, he did not own the video, so one of the passengers (the DB I don’t know) made lots of money of this video. Hell, it was even featured in a Family Guy episode a few months ago.

Sounds like his experience driving fast made him slightly.....complacent.
Misread a wave is a major understatement.. given that wave almost killed them.
With the info you just shared, what’s even more puzzling given his experience in going fast that he didn’t use the same safety practices with his weekend crew that I would imagine he uses with a racing crew. Having passengers not seated and jacketed at those speeds was another huge misread..
They were all very lucky.

That aside, the video is still a classic..

Steve I dont know your buddy or any of the circumstances, but I have to agree with Tusc. Sooo many bad decisions here. Allowing everyone to stand while at speed is the big one for me. I never allow that even in my slow boat. The sticks are are to the dash the whole time. In a boat that will reach 120? In rough water? With everyone standing, braced, and hanging on?
And when he chine walks he backs out of it twice and goes to the dash twice before he lands sideways. My guess is he was probably trying to power out of it before things got ugly. At least he had the muscle memory to shut it down before it threw him

I feel bad for everyone on board and hope they are, or have fully recovered.

Does that mean Tusc is a turd for laughing at the situation?

Probably..😂😂!! But he's one of my favorite turds.

I can't believe that as a participant in a poker run everyone on board was not required to have a life jacket on. How that event allows that is beyond me. Hell, lake cumberland had 3 years in a row of boating accidents, some causing death, so they took away the shootout start.

Poker run...
No life vest..
No Saftey tether
And you mounted a go pro.?

Sure it tragic , and things happen, but regardless of personal beliefs and relationships it’s important to recognize what can happen in an instant.
I took away as what I’ve said before “ you have to know when to lift “
And Tuscany brought us all a reminder of whether your going 70 or 25 mph. You don’t have to proceed.

Honestly I hate that vid. I won't watch it. I've seen it enough. It's painful to watch. If You watch it close you can see how violent it was. Oh yes they got hurt. Yep lots of things wrong with it. It happens so fast. There is a bass fishing boat vid that's just as bad. It hooks up and the guys go flying. It's bad.

Good point Matt. I've posted this before but it bears repeating because things happen sooo fast.

A bass boat running 70 a night. Ran right over the top of my buddy and his wife while they were watching the stars. The bass boat came along and turned at the last minute and went right over the top of them without slowing down.

And it happened in a blink.

I think you are all aware of how i feel about boat safety... no matter your experience level.

YT that's terrifying. It happened on one of the lakes up here and they made a Forensic Files about it if you're familiar with the show. You can find it on NFLX.

That's the one thing that he did right that I'm not sure I would have been able to do - pull down the throttles as he's thrown to the deck. Worth watching, discussing, and knowing the back story if only to prevent others from doing the same things. I'm getting too old to be learning from only my mistakes.

I ended up reading a semi-related page on chine walk to learn a bit more about the forces at work - there's some math, but the videos make it pretty informative: http://www.speedboatsim.com/chine-walk-tech/
