VP 8.1Gi immediately starts then dies

Post by Lockey14s »

Hey guys, quick question here. On our new to us 240, when i go to start the boat for the first time of the day, it immediatly comes to life for a second and then the RPMs drop down too low and it dies. It usually does this twice before it will continue to stay running. I never move the throttle when starting.

Just wondering if this is normal behavior? Or is it a sign of an issue? I know the fuel pumps on these eventually need to be rebuilt and wondering if its starting to lose pressure.

Sure sounds like fuel flow. Check the fuel filter first if it's not fairly new (they are usually easy and cheap), and if that doesn't fix it start looking at the pump.

fuel filter is brand new this year, although i havent taken it off and looked at what might be inside. ill have to get a pressure gauge on the lines and see where the pressure is at.

Hard one to determine unless you could read pressures, and the infamous I.a.c. Readings at the point of failure.
As it’s your first start you can simply remove your flame arrester and clean any carbon build up on the throttle body butterfly top and bottom at the blade contact.
Remember engine off and use neutral button on shifter before you move the throttle.
Then leave the key in the run position for 5 seconds before starting. Your iac may make some adjustments in the first few minutes after cleaning so just let it idle.

Thanks cmatt, i will give it a good cleaning as there is some black dust on and around the engine. Im assuming it came from the belt.

This is every time first start? Mine wasn't everytime by any means. But it did do it sometimes. I would throw a iac at it with the tb clean.
I think Volvo also had some software issues. If fuel pressure and iac are ok. I would send your ecu off to where I did to have them check it and tweak it. OBD diagnostics did mine. I didn't use my boat enough this year on long runs to see if it's 100 percent fixed but it never stalled 1 time this year.

Keep it up and you guys will be on track to pulling your engine for a simple oil change...or swap in one of your spares.
