Ok, first let me say that I loce my 262!

But I recently came across a 272 and really liked the cockpit layout. Now it's all I can think about!

I know, or think I know, that they are the same hull design and length as the 262, pre-2008.

Can anybody tell me the positives and negatives of the 272 vs the 262? The 272 is a heavier boat, but what's the increased weight from? Just the different layout? It seems like fewer were made. Were they less popular? Have they had issues specific to that model? Do they have a notorious flaw?

Boy the layout is totally diff. Side entry, sun pad, frt bow area. Not sure on the head area. I didn't even see it on YT's boat.
The other guys will comment on the rest as I have no idea. Good luck with your new to you 272!!

So the from what i understand the hull is the exact same mold as the first gen 262, they just put a different top on it and called it a 272?

We have a 240 and has a similar layout, just a smaller version and no sunpad. we love the side walk through and the L shape seating. If you enjoy hanging out on the transom then you will really enjoy this layout!

I can say going from the center walk through 262 to now my starboard side walk through on the R7 make sure it has trim tabs. I liked the center on the 262 because passengers seemed too spread out. However on the R7 my interior seems a lot wider than the 262. And it's not just me, everyone that has been in my boat has said the same thing.

It really comes down to

1. center transom walkthrough entry for horse shoe style seating (262) or side entry (272) with a cockpit that appears wider because of less seating. ...and yes trim tabs will be incredibly useful to balance your port-side load.

2. Engine size. A fully optioned out and loaded up 262 really shouldn’t run with anything less than 420 horse. Make sure you do the same with the 272. The hulls are identical and the windshield is pretty much the only major styling change (other than cockpit & storage layout). The bow ladder is a nice addition though.

3. My biggest pet peeve is the loss of bow seating & bow storage to accommodate coolers? Not sure what they are thinking with that one.

In any event, I say go for it especially if you find one with a blue 525 horse pushing a B3 X drive.

That bow layout would kill it for me, I love the full bow seating with the filler cushion, that's where everyone want's to be.

After seeing the bow...

I cannot give any comparison but my first cobalt was/is my 272 and I could not be happier. I am pretty sure the port and starboard filler cushions/seats that are not shown in the picture above were standard(at least on the 2007) They are just removable to give you the layout shown. The full bow filler cushion was not an option. I do not have trim tabs and there has only been one time I wished I had them, so yes very nice to have but not a deal breaker.

My 272 has the port and starboard filler seat cushion in the bow area (2008).
The filler in the extreme forward bow area is also there... not sure if the
vertical backside of the anchor compartment has a cushion.. I'll take a look
this weekend. A couple of women who always rode in the bow tried out the
aft lounge cushion, and have permanently re-located.

got the pic... looks the same as the 262 to me.

Thx for posting that OL. If you’re a cooler person then that setup works great. Unfortunately we are not. The 2000-2007 262 series bow seats have wrap around storage compartments which we filled up with ski & tube ropes; life jackets; shoes; and other boating equipment.

Hard to see in this pic. The storage capability of our 262 was beyond tremendous.

Ahh, I understand. More than once, I've grabbed the filler and lifted to access the compartment
underneath, only to have the filler come off in my hand... always wondered why they didn't
use that space for more storage... so it's for coolers. Think I agree that the storage would
be a better use of the space. I still have a lot of storage, but you really never have too much.

It was after the end of production on the 262 that cobalt introduced their “free space proclamation” where they skinnied up the gunwhale area and created a wider more spacious cockpit. So it totally makes sense!
