Hey A7, mine is bigger than yours....

My cockpit that is. (or flight deck now).

The other day, I asked the 787 Dreamliner crew if I could check out the flight deck after the flight. It is so roomy! The captain let me sit in her seat. I felt like a 4-year old I was so excited.

Nice K232a!!!

You look like a natural in that seat.
Yes that Dreamliner cockpit rocks. Now we need some of that in our Cobalt dashboard viewing.

Great pic my friend. 👍🏻

Yes, lets be honest...

Personally, I'm just hoping Boeing gets the 737 Max issues fixed and behind us. The missing jets from the SW fleet is messing with my non-stop Florida schedule..

Great question TG98.

A lot of people don’t know this but much of it is guess work. We have strict FAA oversight and HOPE to pass our check rides every year as we attempt to recall what all these darn switches do!. 😉

Hahaaha! Those goats out the window made me laugh!

Seriously tgrace... it seems to me that would be only two or three things you would really have to remember. Like where's the gas, brakes and steering. The rest is just peripheral clutter..

So A7, if you can fly one of those bad boys does that mean you can fly any of them? I feel pretty confident I could get one off the ground if I had too, but. landing might leave a mark. I'm sure it would...

At my level YT (roughly 20,000 hours), yes....most fixed wing aircraft can be "figured out" using our experience and intuition if the need arises. Legally...well that's another thing as the FAA requires type ratings for different aircraft meaning you have to pass a certified check ride which includes written, oral, and simulator checks to be considered an expert in that aircraft for flying purposes.

.
Natalia in the video below has no experience flying and is put into a 737 simulator with someone acting as Air Traffic Control who is "talking" her down from altitude. It's 15 minutes long but an interesting experiment to watch...

Would be interesting to see how Natalia would do on an IFR approach.

Coming from a piston aircraft, I know I would be way behind the airplane.

That's very interesting. But now how many tower people would know exactly what to do with all of the diff aircrafts out there. It's amazing if could land itself. Why wouldn't you let the computer land it then everytime?

Great question bbp....The 737 has a pretty standard configuration and many controllers also have a piloting background. It is certainly possible that a controller could talk her down but being in the same simulator as Natalya would give you an edge that's for sure.

There are limits to what the auto-land can do but for the most part pilots can be smoother on operating the aircraft manually. We do have to accomplish so many auto-land approaches to stay proficient at it but it's mostly just button pushing and monitoring. More fun to take over manually. :D

So who flies for whom? Ya cockpit jockeys?

My wife agrees on the 737 issue, as a FA, the hours human trafficking has been at a torrid pace for Delta... Monies great, but she said at 29 years, the pace they are flying them due to the 737’s on the ground is fast an furious...

I was just going to say - no trainer ever let me use auto-land playing in a simulator. There was often a glide path indicator telling you whether you're too high or too low, but managing the yoke and pedals with a cross breeze is most of what I remember fighting to manage. Still, pretty neat that a plane as old as a 737 can do what it did in the video with so little operator input.
