Ever Wonder What a 5.0 Piston Looks like? Me too...

Post by NautiGirl »

The local Ford dealership has had my truck for the last two days trying to track down a water leak. I was complaining quite a bit about driving a Ford Fusion Loaner while my truck, which has 50k miles on it, was in the shop for a fourth time for a water leak. Then I saw this...

2019 King Ranch that got hit by the Ford 5.0 oil consumption issue. I talked to the tech working on it, who was very happy to share details.

The truck came in when Ford was replacing long blocks due to excessive oil consumption. While the truck was torn apart getting its new block Ford changed directions and decided a PCM re-flash an a newly calibrated dipstick (I'm not kidding) would fix the oil consumption. Since they had this particular truck half way apart they went ahead and replaced the long block anyway, which is what I would have wanted if I was driving around a one year old truck that was low on oil. So all is good right? Wrong.

After a few weeks of driving around on the new engine the truck started to overheat and throw codes. Can't imagine why right? They brought the truck back in, and tore down effectively a brand new engine to find coolant in cylinder 6. So now its sitting /w Ford not knowing what to do with it.

I can't imagine seeing my truck looking like this, and also have zero confidence that it would ever be the same. I will happily take my replacement windshield and go home. On the upside i did always wonder what my truck looked like /w its cab off the frame, and the inside of a Ford 5.0 is kinda neat to look at, so there is that.

Ford ruined the coyote motor when they went direct injection. I had a 14’ 5.0 mustang and it was an awesome motor.

I love Ford vehicles, but their warranty sucks. Mrs. akor’s Expedition has been in 4 times and they only covered one thing, and that was only because I found the TSB on the faulty throttle body and called the regional manager. IMO you shouldn’t have to fight to the regional level to get a $150 part replaced on a $50k truck...

The 5.0 is a decent engine, but I don’t really get why they even offered it on tandem with the 3.5 eco.

Not sure its the DI that is causing problems, remember in 2018 they added DI and also increased the bore, which was made possible by the adoption of new Plasma Wire Arc Transfer cylinder liners. Most people are pointing to the new cylinder liners as the cause of the problems.

Ford is sticking by the PCM reflash as being a fix though, here is the text from the updated TSB:

Engineering analysis of engine assemblies replaced under warranty for a customer concern of excessive
oil consumption has found that the majority of engines did not require replacement. Additional engineering
analysis has found that an excessive oil consumption condition may be caused by the powertrain control
module (PCM) strategy which purposely closes the throttle plate during the deceleration fuel shut off
(DFSO) events resulting in high intake manifold vacuum which can pull oil past the piston rings and into
the combustion chamber. To correct the condition, a revised PCM calibration is in the process of being
released to adjust the throttle plate opening angle to reduce engine manifold vacuum during DFSO
events.

Be interesting to see how this all plays out. Most people are saying the 5.0 is going away in the next gen of trucks anyway, so hey new engine with an entirely new set of problems!

I doubt you’ll see another naturally aspirated V8 in future models. I would expect to see the Eco get a refresh and hybrid drivetrains begin to be introduced. Did you see the Rivian with individual motors on each wheel doing zero turns? That’s the future.

Sure you do. They offered the 5.0 because they didn't want to be the first of the big three to not offer a V8 engine option in their full size truck. Dosne't matter that the EcoBoost is a superior engine. Doesn't matter that the 5.0 was never designed to go into a truck and do truck things. What matters is that they offer a V8 option, because 'Merica.

There is still a large, very profitable, group of consumers that will never purchase a Truck /w a V6 let alone a Forced induction V6.

Rumor now is next F150 will still offer a 4.6L V8. There are also rumors of the 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost options being dropped in favor of a single 3.0 Eco offering. I personally cant see them drop the 3.5 after its huge success, but the current engine options are pretty crowded so perhaps thats the reason.

Ah yes I forgot about the increased bore as well.

I could throw a folding chair where the drivers seat should be and it would still tow better than your Durango.

Yes that’s my world buddy as is BBs. Cars and Trucks are designed to be put together efficiently and, Not taken apart right?

This process is actually easier as with our Duramax 2500 it creates a good platform and allows a savings of 2-3 hours of labor.

Plus it lessens the possibilities of leaning over those delicate Ford fenders. lol.

Sorry to hear about your consumption issue but with most MFG running super light oil rings and ridiculous 0W-20W oils it’s more common now.

Honda just came out with 0W-16W ?? Whaaaat?? Crazy.

GM truck and car oil consumption table is 1 Qt in the first 2000 miles as a guide . ( the latter of oil life is more rapid as oil breaks down and burn off makes it even worse).

Our LS supercharged engines are 1 qt expected in 500 miles in moderate to hard driving. GM like all mfg have increased the oil capacity to over 8 qts in the V8 series engines as a result of all this economic thinking.

When everyone changed their oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles nothing seemed to use oil right 🤣?!

So as it’s a disappointment that the new engine has a failure I will ask you to make a request as your confidence is lessened after they did recent work.

Did they uncover the engine for pics or is just sitting open ?? That’s engine taboo .

Strike 1

Do they have a Case started with Ford since they can’t determine coolant loss? After it’s apart and beyond hydrocarbon test ?

Strike 2

Request a replacement engine as your longevity and confidence about the longevity are effected.

There’s a District Service manager that can help authorize it if you request the assistance. No matter it was just replaced.

In the mean time have them cover the short block so I can rest.

Luckily this wasn't my truck mine isn't a V8 and so far has not had any engine oil or fuel dilution issues. I actually sent in a oil sample to blackstone labs a few months ago just to see about fuel dilution, its been a huge problem on my buddies Civic but the truck seems good.

Mine was just in for a water leak, which I was pretty upset about but after seeing this seems pretty minor now. I was in the back picking mine up, made friends with the tech working on this truck and was able to snap a few pics. Once I demonstrated a basic knowledge of Engines this guy was more than happy to tell me how F'ed this truck was. The service manager standing next to us did not seem pleased.

Not everyone changes their oil at 3k? Kidding aside I still do mine at 4k, I know its crazy but its cheap and it warms my heart. The new V8 F150's have a 8.8qt oil pan. I think largely to account for the oil loss between changes. Put almost 9qts in it each change and when it burns two you are not that bad off.

I was super surprised it was just uncovered sitting like that as well. Says a lot about the guy working on it really. He was leaving for the day and it was going to sit like that all night. I cringed too.

Matt I think things /quality has changed since you and I were techs. Techs nowadays care about 1 thing well 2 things. 1 you owe me. 2 how much time can I make on this job. Sorry but that is what it is. The way they get paid is the same way I got paid yes it sucks. But I cared yes I cleaned a engine a trans spotless before it got put back together. Today the techs just don't. It's sad to say. I cringed everytime I see a head off and not covered. So I walk by and put it to sleep nice and sound. Our beautiful parts washer sits in the corner and rusts away. It's sad. It's a different group of guys that are very talented just diff them you and I. And no Mr Nauti you would not be allowed in my shop taking pictures of that beautiful Ford engine all apart. Ok maybe I would just because it's a Ford. Good advertising for us non oil stucking Hemi Ram guys 😂😂
