Twins--at what price

Post by sailor55330 »

I know many of you would give your eye teeth for twins, or so it seems based on posts....this got me to thinking. Would you take twins over a single in any configuration?

Here's a hypothetical example.

Lets use and R5 or R7 as our test boat. What if an option for small twins came out. Say something similar to the 1.8l's that Yamaha uses. I realize they are jet ski engines that are totally different from our single screws---not trying to make this about a jet boat option

I guess what I'm asking is would you trade the displacement for the advantages of twins if the HP were similar?

I wouldn't want twins on anything smaller than 28' personally. Twins will always provide better control and performance, but the maintenance on 2 engines and outdrives on a 23-25' boat isn't worth it IMO.

Yeah with me owning an R7 I can say it would be nice to have a small set of twins for docking but not to the point I would want to care for 2 motors. I think a bow thruster like they have optioned on the A29 would be just fine. My boat being 27ft6in. Lets just call it 26 because 1.5ft of that is the swim platform. I do not see the benefit besides being able to go much faster.

As Akor said. 28ft and over I would 100% want twins.

+1
Other than being able to go much faster, I totally agree.

So since I like the extra speed despite the cost....I'll take the twins.

Ok so would you want twin 240s or a single 430? Maybe that should be the question?
Ok I'll go for twin 300s if thats my choice. Lol I just can't do twin 240s.man I cant even follow my own thoughts.
Really sailor twin v6s or single big small block. Man I just can't do this is so hard 🤔
I would go single with a bow thruster. I would do twin 300s though over a 430.
Play the game sailor what are the largest set of twins can I get in my r7?

Oh im bias obviously on the Twins so Ill keep this part short.

Yes parking is amazing as is pulling off the dock down wind as its like driving a tank.

But the real treat is the effortless ability to maintain a speed once up on plane. You hear and feel as if its hardly needing any throttle input. This also allows it be very economical in fuel consumption as they are not hardly working at all to maintain speed. Its not like taking two boats out for they day

Is it 2 of everything in service needs? Yes! Are you safeguarded should you have one system fail and can make it back safely. Yes! And lastly... can you trouble shoot a warm" no starter crank " by robbing a starter relay from the other engine fuse box, and thanking god it wasn't the starter? yes !! (last summer).

Soooooo I thought Id share a fun tidbit..

I asked Rick at Cobalt during the tour in 2018 about twin 6.2 ltr in a 272 model back in 2005.

" Has anyone ever ordered one" I asked hoping to hear I could hunt one down as even with twin 6.2s I thought it would be special. :D

His reply with a curious expression, but convincing tone was " It never happened "

This was from Cobalt Owners manual that my question had came from.
272-2005COBALT.jpg
.
It made sense as 28 ChristCraft launches had twins in standard, and staggered configuration. ( Side entry 9.6 beam ). Formula 272 had twin small blocks with a 8.6 beam. And Cobalts 269 Condurre had small , and twin Big Blocks with TRS drives. (8.6 beam).

So worth the price to most consumers these days..?? sadly no it seems. But im still hoping there a secret squirrel 2005 272 with twin scorpion 6.2s out there somewhere!

I can't go there Mr 215. I'm playing sailors game. No 1350s or larger allowed. We are talking a R7 or r5. I'll take twins in a r3 though. Yt see what I did there 😂😂

I was wondering if Cobalt entertained the idea of custom outboard selections...Seven Marine would really rock on the transom of a Cobalt...have you ever heard them at full tilt?

I have a pic of one of their 627's with the hood up, on a Carbon Marine boat. To quote Chris Farley, "that was awesome!"
