New member 2000 206!

Hello everyone,

I recently picked up a 2000 Cobalt 206 off FB marketplace. I wasn’t really looking for a new boat as I had a pontoon I was going to restore but I was really getting bored with it as it just wasn’t fast enough (26mph) to get me where I wanted to go on our lake. (Beaver Lake in Northwest Arkansas)

So I just happened to be browsing and came across a 206 that was one owner and was in really good shape for 20 years old. I have seen 5 year old boats in worse condition!!

After a quick test drive I instantly knew this would be our next boat. I was thrilled with the smooth ride, quick hole shot offered from the duo prop and best of all no wood construction and in my price range!!

Previous boats have been a 1998 Baja Hammer with a 454 (First boat, learned a lot)

2003 Lowe Trinidad 224 with 90HP Johnson 2 stroke (Friend moved out of state and I ended up with this, not really my style)

Currently I have the Cobalt all torn apart to upgrade the stereo. It already was cut out under the dash for a 12” subwoofer and I wanted the speakers and subwoofer to match so that limited me to all kicker Speakers and subwoofer. They will be powered by a JL MX800 amp and a Fusion RA70N head-unit in the dash with MX300 controllers in the helm and stern factory remote locations.

Future plans are new steering wheel, marine mat stick down flooring, hydro dip all wood panels with a carbon fiber look, plugs/oil/impeller and a good overall waxing/cleaning.

Welcome from California.
Great introduction and pics! ( we will skip past the pontoon restoration).
There are members here that will definitely enjoy your stereo upgrade as this has become common practice.

That’s a great combo and a nice tandem axel trailer too. Looking forward to more pics and starting a thread for your upgrades.
Nice touch on lighting a candle for the Cobalt gods.

Very nice and welcome again. Did you get lucky and it had a 5.7 in her?
Looks like the driver princess is having fun as well 👍👸
Good choice on changing out the sub and matching it all up and stainless cup holders help a bunch. The steering wheel is the icing.

Welcome form Texas and very nice boat. I am glad you are replacing the speaker system. The previous sub might be the ugliest thing I have ever seen.

Thanks everyone!! I am loving the boat. Progress is going pretty slow right now as we just got back from vacation.

I am hoping to have the audio done by this weekend. Looks like some decent weather is coming next week and I would like to get one good day on the water before I take the dash apart to send off for coating.

It does have the 5.0 GI, of course bigger would be better but I’ll stick with this setup for now as it’s running strong.

Still working on the boat.

I was having some issues with noise at low volume that I was able to chase back to the NMEA 2000 power wire. I tried to get away with running it on the same wire as the head unit but guess I won’t be doing that.

Has anyone ran the wiring directly from the head unit to the battery with a toggle switch for the head unit?

Where could I buy a factory toggle switch?

My memory wire is direct. My switched is still the factory wire. The cables all new. No issues at all.

We had the boat on the water today as it was on the 80s!!

Had a great time!

I’m going to wire the stereo to the docking lights switch on the dash bc I dislike how it turns off when I turn the ignition on or off to move the boat.

I don’t have docking lights, wiper or Captains call. when I redo the dash I will get the labels changed. Planning to use the wiper switch for the NMEA2000 power and the captains call for the LED lights on the speakers.

Also planning to order the marine mat template soon so I can get that taken care of.
