Trailer for 282 vs 272?

Hi all. I recently acquired a 2008 282 with twin engines without a trailer. A friend has a trailer that came new with his 2003 272 that I could buy.

Would the 272 trailer be suitable for the slightly newer 282? If not, could it be made to work with minor modifications?

Thanks in advance.

Length wise you should be fine, but does the trailer have adjustable bunks or was it custom built for the 272?

Measure from the bow eye to the transom. The measure the bow stop to the rear of the bunks. Look at how far the winch stand can go forward.

As your going to a 6 inches wider I worry the inside flat chines will ride on the bunks. ( the 282 has a wide center ).
As most OEM trailers Bunks are set to ride inside the second chines for proper load and centering .

She’s a beast over a 272. Here’s some pics of my 282 custom trailer by EZLoader.
You can see the overhang on the trailer fender.
There’s a reason trailers don’t say 272/282.

Thanks for the great information. I am going to pursue plan B: have a local fabricator see if they can modify this one to fit the 282:

Wifey's Lexus GX 460. Don't really need a trailer as the cobalt dealer/marina moves her on and off the water through their service center of course! My dream is tow it to the "big water" up north (lake pend oreille where the Navy still test submarine sonar stuff) and take a spin from Bayview to Sandpoint. Time will tell if this works out or this trailer becomes a storage nightmare.

You mean you will be picking the empty trailer up from the fabricator /w your wife's GX 460 and then hooking it up to a very large 3/4 or 1 Ton truck before loading the boat on correct?

Hmmm, had a feeling this dream of lake hopping was going to be a challenge!

Nothing worthwhile is ever easy right? I'm not playing the towing police, but let's run some quick numbers.

The 2020 GX 460 has a rated towing capacity of 6,500lbs.

Cobalt lists the dry weight of a 282 with dual engines at 7,825 which actually isn't as heavy as I thought it was going to be

Lets say the Trailer is 1,750lbs

90 Gallons of Fuel at 6lbs per - 540lbs

That's over 10,000lbs behind an SUV Rated to tow a little over half that number.

Towing is a highly subjective thing, some people are comfortable towing over limits some are not. Hook it up and see - take pictures for sure.

...
And even if you meet all those requirements jrw, the legal towing width limit in Idaho (as in most states) is 8’6” without needing a special tow permit.

The 282 comes in with a 9’ beam.

Be careful out there my friend.

Welcome and congrats. Coming in on the tail end and saw the 460 was the proposed towing vehicle. As mentioned, do some homework. That's a pretty ambitious goal in the towing world....

It's funny 1 person had been petty quiet on this. Cadalanche!!! He pulls his all over the Country with no issues and no worries just ask him. If you need anything used from his boat he has it. Cheap too😂😂😂

Here’s my Cadalanche with a 6.2ltr 403hp package. It’s equipped with air bags just for this reason.
Yes the 282 is massive on a trailer.
Oh and the trailer empty is 3040 lbs.

.

My twice a year tow from my shop to the Marina to launch her.( 2 miles ). Yes that’s 12,000 lbs !
I wouldn’t consider a long freeway tow as she has the power to take off..

But stopping is terrifying!
