Hey guys

I just had my cobalt 46 yacht burn in Miami two weeks ago at the rickenbacker marina. I live in Chicago and figured for the summer with travel limited I would get a lake boat for lake Geneva. I really wanted a Chris craft launch gt 28 but finally succumbed to the cobalt being more usable and practice for my family and kids. Bought it yesterday and will have it next week. Can’t wait !

I’m sorry to hear about your 46' Cobalt. I trust no one was injured. What started the fire?

Any pics of your future addition? How is she powered? I think you made the right decision on the Cobalt over the Chris Craft L28 based upon functionality. The Launch series have an elegant look but usability can be difficult...especially with water sports and family activities.

My cobalt is the one in the middle. Fire was caused by the Van Dutch 55 to the left of it. Cause is still under investigation as nobody was there.




I really was in love with the Launch GT series as it was more usable then the original launch series, but the cobalt crushed it in functionality. Here are pics of it before it gets on its way to me.

Glad there were no casualties. Hurts to see the destruction though. Like those burned JL speakers and the melted fiberglass of your 46 and Van Dutch. Did you lose any valuables inside it? Were you able to salvage anything? How much did your insurance cover?

Van Dutch makes a quality machine but their looks take a little getting used to. You see them come thru Haulover inlet and they really stand out. For some reason they kind of remind me of the Monitor & Merrimack.

Gorgeous colors on your new Cobalt. I wish Cobalt would bring back their signature larger can-style bow lights in an LED form...especially on these bigger boats. Btw some REV 10 Wet Sounds tower speakers would complement your white tower well. How is she powered?

Can you shoot a link to the tower speakers you recommended ? How hard to install and wire to existing system?

She is powered by Volvo 430. Wish she had a bow thruster but apparently dealers have not been ordering thrusters.

Yes, that A29 will be quite a handful docking in a crosswind with no bow thruster and a single engine. Be sure to give us a Captain's report.

Not sure what your budget is for tower speakers. I'm a big fan of JL Audio inside the boat for it's accuracy, looks (just recently), reliability, reputation, power, and functionality. For outside boat listening it is very hard to beat horn driven tweeters & 10" woofers with lots of power behind them. Wet Sounds makes a killer product for this. Their REV10's look great and project so well...both bass and treble. We just added them to our boat and posted a quick demo here.


Again, knowing your budget and how you want to use them will allow folks to make recommendations. I'm guessing with an A29 new boat purchase in Miami you are leaning toward higher end. Top of the line tower speakers with the addition of top of the line power and wiring will run close to $4,000. We used a Wet Sounds Sinister SDX4 4 channel amp to mono bridge our tower speakers giving them almost 700 Watts each. The Wet Sounds REV10's that we used were ordered with stainless swivel clamps and covers. The white works well for our stainless tower. Also consider black. You'll see some boats with 4 tower speakers but it is not necessary with the setup above. Plus you will have more headroom. IMHO, for your size boat, I would not recommend any 8" tower speakers as they will look small (unless you are doing multiple). If you do 8" tower speakers I'd consider Rockford Fosgate horns or JL Audio 8.8's. If your tower folds then you may want smaller.

The links above are for Creative Audio (except RF). James Taylor (JT) has worked with a number of folks here and can help with pricing as well. Ask for him. The dude knows his stuff.

Also consider Crutchfield. Fantastic service, amazing website, and they've been around forever.

Most folks will recommend two amps....one for inside boat audio that also powers your sub and another amp for outside boat (tower or transom) audio.

Installation to the towers required fishing wire through our Samson tower and drilling thru the thick stainless with carbide bits. Yours might already be prewired. Honestly I'd recommend an installer as there are some other install items to consider for some of these prewired Cobalts. We upgraded our power supply wires to 0 gauge and added a 135 amp breaker for the install.

Finally, if you do much night boating, consider the LED rings with the tower speakers. They look cool. BigBlockPower added them to his Wet Sounds shown here.

Did not get it from gordys but saw their a29. Will post some pics of my 46 before the fire shortly.

Did you get your new boat?
