220 Stern Ladder/Tower Screw Restore

Post by SAB220 »

2004 Cobalt 220

This is a continuation of the thread list below. Thought I should start another thread to present this issue (nothing is broken, just worn). Below is an illustration of my boat stern ladder/tower hardware followed by its Bill of Material (BOM). Need help finding part #2. I prepared this illustration to send to suppliers like McMaster-Carr.

Note: part #8 is stamped F593C SS. This is a material code is for 304, or 18-8, SS so this was a driver for getting 304/18-8 SS ladder parts. These parts are for my Fresh Water (FW) boat. Suggest if you’re in SW maybe 316 SS is better suited for you (I don’t do SW anymore).
Below is a brief description of the parts:

#1 Simple SS washer but the original washers appear cupped (indented) or damaged
#2 Need your help. So far I can’t find this part, see BOM. Its hard rubber but has a rubber shoulder. It’s not damaged so I could reuse. There are nylon choices so could get a nylon part, however, I think the ladder should not be rigid and have some flexibility. There is a similar part for water closets (toilets).
#3. Existing washer is damaged and is located next to ladder. My new washer is Teflon. Another choice is nylon.
(Ladder located here)
#4. same as #3
#5. Spacer - will install nylon or rubber depending on the fit/install
#6 same as #1
#7 & 8 ½ 304/18-8 SS Bolt and nylon nut
9 & 10 The saga continues. See BOM McMaster comments. The bolt is called a shoulder bolt. The McMaster shoulder bolt has a slightly smaller shoulder then the existing.

I lubricated the ladder with waterproof grease. It definitely helped but is not a total solution for the piston ladder.

A few years ago cobalt still had that tower knob. I pd like $75 bucks though. It hurt but it it worked.
I have to look but one of the other aftermarket tower manufacture has the same one just without the plastic. Its metal of some sort.

I not desperate yet but I need to have a tower spare screw or two available. Yes will look at other towers. BBP I believe you said it was a Roswell tower. Its not the screw that does the work its the shoulder of the screw (length & dia) . The tower is sitting next to house (boat is wrapped). Will see how the Mcmaster screw, described in #9, fits tower. The existing hdwr is described in the comments.

Thought the pass through knob might work (shown below), but MC said No. I might just order one to see how it works.

Correct I under stand what the shoulder of that bolt in the knob does. I have the same tower. Again did you try Cobalt yet? I emailed them and Rick at Cobalt gave me the part number and I ordered it through the dealer. Again that was about 3 years ago though.
