Quick question on warranty work. I’m purchasing a new CS23 in MN and the dealer is 2.5 hours away from our place. Can I have warranty work done at a local Mercruiser or VP dealer even though they’re not a Cobalt dealer? I’m not sure I want to have to drive 2.5 hours for any necessary warranty work. Thanks.

If they will work on it is the other question. What ever engine set up you go with. They can only do work on the engine that they are certified for. If they are not a Cobalt dealer then they can't do any boat warranty work. It's like bringing a chevy to a dodge dealer, nope!

If it's clearly a problem with your Volvo engine they can fix the engine, for example, but it gets dicey if the problem relates to how it was installed or some other area of the boat. From a technical standpoint, there's nothing proprietary or too tricky that a good boat shop can't work on it though.

Do you have good rapport with any engine dealers outside of your Cobalt dealer? If you do I would lean towards that engine brand. It is so much easier when you can fully trust the place you are taking it to.

Thanks for the comments. We have Mercruiser dealers up where we are at. One quick question on horsepower. On this site I saw some of the “prop charts” for a CS23 and it shows a quicker time to plane for the 300hp versus the 350hp. Can anyone shed some light on that for me? Why would that be? We will be doing lots of water sports and the hole shot is important for us. We also enjoy top end speed though. Thanks again for the help.

I can answer from a VP perspective. With the higher HP they use a bigger prop. (Mind you that the engines are the same and this is just an ECU program to allow more HP up at the top of the RPM scale and that also the torque curves are the same.) This allows the slight MPH advantage, which is comes with a time to plane cost. This is why we stuck with a 300HP engine, as our old 454 220 was only rated at 310HP.

I would also like to ad that the 3 dealers around us only stock CS23s with 280HP V6s and thought I was a crazy maniac for wanting a V8.

I can answer from a VP perspective. With the higher HP they use a bigger prop. This is just me. Stop looking at prop charts. If you can get the boat to plane the exact time everytime your a pro. Your boat will never perform at those numbers. Maybe better maybe worse. Every engine is different just saying. Just look at the hp next to the numbers!

Its not the. 01 its 350HP or 430HP!
