MerCruiser vs Volvo

Post by IntrepidBoater »

I'm sure this topic has gotten beaten to death, so I apologize upfront.

is there any difference in a 220s with a Merc 6.2L 300/B3 vs the Volvo equivalent?

Thanks

the merc is old school sbc with mpi fuel injection. very proven engine

VP is the new GM LS all aluminum direct injected engine that has been in their pickups since 2014. Very fuel efficient engine and I will never go back to mpi

correct when Gm went to the LS motors for marine engines Merc went off on their own and created a motor based off the old GM specs.

I have the 6.2 VP motor in my R7 and I love it.

how much would you discount in comparing Merc to VP, assuming the boat you want is only offered with Merc?

I had a 220 with a Merc, When I would start it cold in the water it would blow black (carbon) in the water, then when I would back up it would get on the swim platform. It cleaned easily if I cleaned it right away but if it sat for awhile it was difficult to clean. Never did figure out the cause but got the impression it was a symptom of Merc engine. Decided then that I wouldn't do merc again, which went find since my next boat was a surf.

Merc is actually a new engine block that they built including their fuel injection since 2016. The bore and stroke are different from the GM 6.2l including the act that its a steel block where the GM engine is an aluminum block with steel cylinder sleeves.

And what engine is this merc based off? Will a set of heads off my 1968 327 bolt on? You also do realize that 6.2 equals 383 ci, which is the most popular aftermarket 1st gen sbc displacement combo for the last 25 years, which is also irrelevant to the LS engine family? And if you want to further your semantics Merc block is cast iron, it is not cost effective to mass produce steel blocks.

According to Mercruiser and press releases, the engine was designed from scratch and NO, your heads won't fit. It was designed so it could share 65% of the parts of the 4.5L engine they designed, also from scratch.

Ford also makes a 6.2L engine and your heads won't fit it either LOL

BTW, 6.2L is 377 Cubic inches for these engines...rounding errors.

You are correct about cast iron vs steel...sorry was off by a few percentage of carbon.

Does Volvo have something equivalent to Mercruiser's DTS system. I do have to say, I like the fact that there are no mechanical cables up to the helm control. Makes shifting and throttle effortless with no cables.

I did a quick search last night and couldn't find the name of the system. I figured they did but couldn't confirm.

I have had a Volvo for the last 19 years. Had a Volvo 270 for many years before that. personally, there isn't a huge difference in the drive portion of the equation. Once Volvo's patents ran out and Mercruiser copied their cone clutch system, they are pretty similar.

Yes they do. Volvo calls it EVC(electronic Vessel Control). I have it on my R7. Works nicely
