Transom straps, trailering clips etc Newby
Transom straps, trailering clips etc Newby
Hey guys. New to this forum. I've been boating for about 34 years, always wanted a Cobalt and finally am about to take delivery of a new R6. As most of you know, it's not been easy to find a boat. I'm having to go about 200 miles to get it. I don't trailer as much as I used to, but still consider myself very careful. Anyway, I am unfamiliar with what will be in this town and want to be prepared when I get there.
Question1, can anyone tell me how long a transom strap I need? I would assume that 4 foot is long enough, but would appreciate any confirmation.
Question 2, historically i've used trailing clips on the outdrive to help support. Does anyone have an opinion of using those versus the poles that support the outdrive from the trailer?
Any other suggestions to secure her to get her home would be appreciated
Thanks!

Hey RNR6. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!
Four to five feet on the transom straps will be more than plenty. Mine are permanently affixed to the trailer and only need to extend about one foot. The R series may need slightly more than that depending on the swim platform and mounting points.
I used to use trailer clips with my first boat. Now that I’m on my fourth I realize it’s overkill. Kinda like the best diapers you buy for your first child. After your third child they are running around naked.
Others will chime in shortly. Be sure to post pics when you can....and again welcome aboard mate!

What are trailer clips? I have been boating for over 40 years and never heard of them.

My trailer (EZ Loader) has one of these on each side in the rear, which are all we use to secure the back of our boat. They work pretty well:

Re: Transom straps, trailering clips etc Newby
Thanks for the comments and link. I've asked a few questions about delivery but have yet to get any confirmation exactly what may be included when I take delivery. Just wanting to be safe than sorry. And I also have no idea how extensive the dealers store is.
Clips. I had a set but honestly, can't find them because after trailering for the first several 12-15 years, i've been in a marina since so that stuff just kind of disappears over the years.
Cheers!

More Votes for boat buckles, We put one on the bow also. Since they retract and stay there, it's just another "something" you don't have to keep up with, it's right there where it belongs all the time.Big Block Power wrote: Sun Mar 28, 2021 9:08 amBest item ever! My boat sits high enough, the drive won't hit the groundAsLan7 wrote: Sun Mar 28, 2021 8:32 pm.

The boat buckle has a break strength of 1500 pounds. Is that enough for your boat’s weight? I had a difficult time finding straps with a 2500 break strength that is in line with the 5,000 pound weight of my boat. I would love the convenience of boat buckles though. Are they enough for my boat?

Great question davisef.
Break strength relates to the LIGHTEST part of the load (ie trailer).
This was discussed and answered in this thread here and on the Etrailer.com FAQ section here.
