Hello,

I have owned my 2007 Cobalt 222 since new and have enjoyed many seasons with her.

I have always noticed this boat was "louder" than my previous Regal but I just assumed that was the nature of this beast.

This year while I was returning her to summer time status, I noticed exhaust exiting the two ports normally utilized when you select "Captain's call" on the dash. I would have thought with the "captain's call" in the off position, all the exhaust would be directed through the lower foot.

Is this normal for some of the exhaust (and accompanied noise) to travel through those ports? When I select "captain's call" to the ON position, it seems to work normally. LOUD..

Am I just noticing this or is this an issue I need to see a maintenance tech about?

Hey Rusty. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

It is normal for a slight amount of the exhaust to exit thru the hull with the thru the prop option selected. That being said the sound should be significantly reduced when the thru the prop option is selected. There are two butterfly valves that are electronically activated by rams. It would be rare for both rams to fail at the same time. Are you noticing an uneven amount of noise from one side vs the other? Switch your CC on and off while watching the rams.

Yes. Even though the diverters are shut, some exhaust will come through the tips. especially at idle this will happen. once you give it more throttle the exhaust flows down the Y pipe more. As long at they are switching on and off fine then you have nothing to worry about.

I had the same issue. With the engine off I could hear the solenoids switching very firmly so I never looked any further.

Do you have any photos of your boat?

I know people buy this option but I've never understood it. I know operating a powerboat isn't getting back to nature like paddling a canoe, but it seems like it is as compared to driving a muscle car down the street on cruise night. Loud exhausts on boats operating in cottage country just seem out of place to me.

I was test driving an electric Audi a few weeks ago. It was quite quick and silent. That was music to my ears. I don't like to "show", I just like to "go" I guess.

I had to change a solenoid on mine back in October. After my first run since October I found the flapper had come off the shaft and lodged near the exit.

The yoke on the solenoid has some adjustment to change the travel of the flapper. Could be your flapper isn’t quite closing completely.

We routinely have a boat full of 30ish year old women and they think it sounds "bad ass". Their words not mine, I was dumb founded when I heard her say it.

The exhaust is equal on both sides of the outdrive so I'm sensing they are working properly. It was strange since this was the first time I noticed it after owning the boat since 2007. I guess I wasn't as observant as I thought!

I am sure I have pictures of my Cobalt and will have to post them.

Hi Bob,

I RARELY use the CC but my teenage kids used it often. I do like the noise of "silence" and can appreciate not wanting to disturb the peace.

Thanks to all that took the time to share their thoughts and wisdom. I am a HUGE advocate of special interest Forums and appreciate the wealth of knowledge.

Regarding pictures... like they say, no pictures... it didn't happen! Well, I need to scour my hard drive to find some decent pics of the boat. Unfortunately it has been the kids for the last two seasons who have been using the boat and not Mom & Dad. We are still on the water, but normally traveling at 9mph and WOT we can scream across the water at 11mph.

Rusty - I realize I'm a bit late to the party... My dad has CC on his 220, 496 ho. I do not on an 8.1 VP. His makes a very nice rumbling noise with the pipes closed... Mine, well, I might as well be pushing 4 cylinders, not 8. As other have said, this is normal.

Also, I have this addition on my wish list. Even with the pipes closed, I just think it sounds right... Might I say, American!
