First 30 days of new 2021 Cobalt R6 Surf ownership thoughts

Post by NW Dave »

So it has actually been a little over 30 days given I took delivery on April 14th. I've taken her out every chance I had which this time of year here means when the temperature was >66 and mostly clear skies. That translated to roughly 15 times and I have logged over 35 hours on the engine so far. Engine was broken in and serviced at 22 hours. Not sure if useful for anyone but thought I'd share some of my thoughts on her so far.

Overall, this is an amazing boat which my entire family is incredibly appreciate of. As our first boat overall, we're very glad we went with Cobalt and the R6 Surf. I wanted to make sure we could cruise and do all the water activities we wanted. Within the first week, my son picked up wake boarding and wake surfing. He's still a beginner but he's getting up consistently and having a blast. My wife and I love just cruising around Lake Washington and finding a nice area with little wind or current and just "drifting" lazily about. This is especially nice with some warm weather and sunshine we've had the past month.

In addition to water sports, we wanted to have a boat large enough to occasionally take some of our extended family members out with us from time to time. We have been able to test the boat out with 11 adults and fully grown children. Water sports were still great and so was cruising. She definitely sits low in the water with full ballast tanks and all the passengers but still handled great and moved when throttle was applied thanks to the Volvo 380 I opted to upgrade to.

Wake boarding looks fine and the wake the surf gate system throws is quite nice. At times the wake surf system doesn't seem to shape the same type of wake so I feel I'm still needing to fiddle and figure out a system that is supposed to be easy, press a few options on the touch screen and go. Definitely changes character depending on the number of passengers and whether or not someone is trying to ride the wake vs. just "showing it off".

I'm not sure how the R6 Surf would handle with the base 350 motor but I feel the 380 is definitely sufficient for everything we're wanting to do. The color choice of caramel and black do make for a hot surface to sit on during warm, sunny days. If you are jumping in and out of the lake, getting wet, getting the seats wet, etc. - shouldn't be an issue. The color scheme looks fantastic and gives the boat a classy look. So far, the material is holding up as I was hoping it would but will see how things look by the end of the season in late September.

They boat design is new given this is the first year of the R6 and with it, it seems to have a few issues still to be fully resolved. Either that or I am experiencing a few issues particular to just my boat and its assembly.

The gunwale on the port side where the tower attaches is already showing a spiderweb series of cracks in the gelcoat layer. I contacted my service department and they're putting in a work order under warranty. This likely happens to boats on occasion so not faulting it being a first year design kink. As long as they take care of it, I'm fine.

There are a few too many angles, sharp corners, metal features jutting out, etc. on the windshield and walkthrough area that need care when passing through. I've now gotten no less than 3 cuts, nicks, scrapes on my legs and back from various bits and bobs. Not sure if they were the same on previous Cobalt boats but I'm the family guinea pig here and others are learning from me on what not to do and what to watch out for. :)

The locking sliding bolt for the walkthrough door is poorly designed and not quite working well on my boat. Not sure anyone can do anything about it but Cobalt with a better design. When the door is secured, I have to lock it in the UP position vs. DOWN. When DOWN, it creeps up slowly as we're under power and at speed. I've had it fly open and slam the side of the cockpit once scaring the crap out of me. In the counter-intuitive UP position, it doesn't creep down and stays locked.

Just yesterday, I found a locknut on the floor under my captain's chair. I reached under to see if I could figure out if it was from the seat or something else. Sure enough, one of the bolts there was missing the locking nut and another had the nut halfway down the bolt. Thank goodness I noticed it when I did. Not sure why these bolts are not secured better.

I've had a few glitches with the twin Garmin system which only reset when I turned the ignition off then back on. Only happened once so far but I had the left display not advance past the distracted driving warning disclaimer and show the dashboard.

My boat is going to get checked out by the Service department this week hopefully for my boneheaded move while out yesterday. I managed to get the wake board line wrapped around the prop. We managed to get nearly all of the line off but a last bit. Lesson learned and will not be repeated but hoping she can get this cleared up before Memorial Day weekend where we're expecting fantastic weather for the latter end of it.

The LED lights are very fun and cool. All of the kids really love it even though we haven't been out when dark enough to really enjoy them. We're looking forward to a few sunset and dinner cruises this weekend on the lake! And despite the few issues above, we're still very much loving and enjoying the heck out of this Cobalt R6 Surf! Definitely recommend to anyone else considering one.

Nice report...my R6 Surf order has been delayed due to Cobalt supply chain issues...shortages of resin, latches and windshields. Was supposed to ready by now, but now looking at mid-July. :x

Thanks for the post!

As far as the sharp lines on the interior that was a concern of mine when I walked an r6 and an r8. My R7 has much more rounded lines on the interior.

As far as the garmins see if there is an update for them. Download the garmin active captain app and see if there is an update. There could be a bug in the code you are on. They update over wireless/Bluetooth.

I don't want to air out any dirty laundry on my boat here but here goes...Similar experience in the angles, that windshield is really sharp and although I haven't been cut, if you hit it just right, it's gonna hurt!

I've got some of my marine mat in the very back corner near the boarding step on the starboard side that's seemed to separate, but that's an easy fix. One of my tower speakers isn't working (lights work though so they still look cool). I have a gasket missing from one of my triton racks (no biggie there). I was throwing a code due to my surf gate not coming back in and one of the clamps was binding up preventing it from closing all the way. We were able to pull it out from the water and it reseated properly. Jury is still out on that since we didn't surf again. Another R6 Surf owner reported that their surf gate was sheared off completely though, so be sure and watch for that. The screws do not appear to be long enough based on the pic he sent over messenger. My fuel vent is clogged completely so it takes me about 45 mins to get 12 or so gallons of fuel into the boat. HOPING they can resolve that one ASAP. Rear camera never worked.

Other than the fuel vent being clogged and the surf gate binding up, the boat is killer overall. We absolutely love it and got it about the same time as NW Dave above (April 17). We have 18 hours logged on it and hope to get the full 20 in over the holiday weekend and will get it serviced after the holiday weekend. I'm fully confident that the dealer will sort this out and know that this is just part of getting a new boat. With the 380, the boat jumps out of the water and really rides smooth, but I do think that the 350 may be enough based on what we use it for. Top speed appears to be 48-ish with a full tank of fuel and family of 4.

I've said it before on here as well as on FB...the platinum sound with the Roswell speakers and amps is insane. It is by far the best sounding (clean, balanced, etc.) system I've ever heard on the water.

Yeah unfortunately you get to be the testers buying a first year model. I’m certain your dealer and cobalt will resolve everything.
I remember when the r3/5/7 surf came out people would try to use the surf tabs at high speeds like trim tabs and sheer them off.

I took possession of my R6 Surf in February. I have around 30 hours and the boat has ran perfectly and the only issues I have had is the camera and the led lights on the tower. Service team replaced the camera and fixed the lights. Both have worked flawlessly since. Although I noticed some of the sharp angles of the windshield, I nor any of my passengers have had any scrapes or cuts. The surf wake is impressive, ride is great and the speed is right at 50mph with 2 passengers and 3/4 of a tank.

Work got crazy busy in a hurry there but checking back in. Thanks everyone for your comments. Appreciate all the great tips, info and wealth of info on this site that is helping me as a Cobalt owner. Dealership continues to be outstanding and helping me whenever needed. I called my service department on Monday morning and 24 hours later it was fixed despite them being busy. Each and every time I launch and return my boat, I spend time to talk to the forklift operator who launches and retrieves the boats. Really great guy and he must have seen the rope fragment tangled in the prop when he retrieved it last Saturday. Service department said my boat was already in the service bay which made it easy to address right away. They also tightened all my bolts on the captains chair so should be set for awhile.

New tow rope arrived and looking forward to great weather this weekend to go back out. Definitely going to have someone mind the line this time and also going to avoid reversing while the line is out. Just was lazy and paid for it.

You'll love it! I almost stepped up to the R8 Surf but largely for a silly reason - to match my daily driver in model name. :) Do drop your thoughts when you get her and share some photos.

Yeah I'm just the unlucky one in the family. Nobody else has had an issue. My body is "testing" the new boat for us all. ;) I opened her up with 4 of us on the boat and about half a tank and got up to around 50 as well. Felt like she was really moving!

Great idea. Downloading the app now and will be back on the boat this Saturday weather permitting. Sunday for sure at the latest and will check SW updates availability.

I'm sorry to hear that carrera! Supply chain shortages of all sorts of materials everywhere. Hopefully they can find some solution or qualify an alternate set of suppliers soon to mitigate.

No dirty laundry at all but experiences there! Hopefully they get your couple of issues addressed so that you can enjoy her fully and as intended. The 380 is a lot of fun and she rides great on our lake here. Cruising speeds of 24-30 seem to be a sweet spot of low wind, low noise, decent motoring speed getting from point A to B. When just my son and I out there, we open her up further due to our impatience at times and thrill seeking. And the sound system is great. No distortion or crackling at all. Love the zones to control volume. When he's surfing we crank it up back there for him to enjoy while being towed. So many great memories already and building more each week!

Would either of you care to share what you actually paid for your R6 surf? I’ve got an 18 r3surf and like the thought of carrying a few more people as well as I think the surf gate tech would be better than the surf tabs my boat has. Tia

NW Dave and BHD have you found an optimal setting for the surf wave yet? We surfed for the first time this weekend and being a newbie to surfing we are still trying to figure everything out. Here are a few of my observations:
1. It takes around 6 1/2 minutes to fill the tanks (not too bad but I don't have anything else to compare)
2. After watching videos of the R6 Surf I am filling all the tanks and choosing surf left. Next weekend I will try to only fill the left tank to see what difference it has on the wave.
3. I had a guy on the boat this weekend who surfs behind a Nautique and said the wave was very similar. He said it might even be a little taller. It would be nice to have a little more control over the wave like shape, size, length, etc. (I'm getting a little greedy now!)
4. You do have to watch the surf wave coming over the back of the boat. Haven't quite got the routine down yet. When a surfer goes down I slow down to about half speed and then make a wide turn. We have had 4 women sitting in the front all weekend and they would occasionally get sprayed a little when circling back around since the nose of the boat sits a lot lower in the water than my R5.
5. The wakeboard racks are really nice. However if you have them both extended their width is approximately 10' 3-4". My dock slip width is 11' which does leave me with much margin for error when pulling in our slip so we unlock them and pull them in when docking.
6. I'm glad I upgraded to the Roswell audio system. This is by far the best boat audio system I've ever heard. It will get as loud as you can stand it and at the same time it has pristine quality not like these pontoon boats that install after market tower speakers on the back!
7. Not a big fan of the rear bumper location. Almost have to get on the rear deck to install them. I do like the ones directly across from the driver's seat. I almost wish there was a third set in the front of the boat so you would have three total. This would really help with hooking up with other boats. I opted for the 8" bumpers in this boat.
8. I do agree with the comments on the sharpness of the corners on the windshield. I warn all passengers to be careful. My wife thought we should get some of those child furniture bumpers to put on the corners (doubt that will happen)

All for now. I will post more thoughts as I have them.
