1978 cobalt condesa won't start when put into neutral

Hello when I take it out of gear i can start the boat bit when I pull the lever back and lock it in gear it dies, i can immediately restart it as well thanks for the help.

you must have a merc? Neutral safety switch bad or adjustment. Not sure if the shift interupter such would cause that though. It might.
