‘19 R5 Vibration

Post by Snowman73 »

Hi All,

Looking for some help. 2019 R5 Volvo 350. In the last five rides the boat has developed an awful vibration like traveling fast over a series of small waves. Vibration is most noticeable at 18-20mph. Then very noticeable when accelerating at or above 27mph. At low end speeds like 6.5mph its like the boat is chugging to go. In fact the Vibration is causing the screws on the Bimini to loosen. I took the boat to Gordys last week and they pulled drive and checked alignment, u-joints, prop shaft and changed spark plugs. They came back and said everything was perfect. They said they have had complaints of motor mounts in the past causing vibration but they checked out good. Next step would be to balance the props if I wanted. It’s so bad I’m not even looking forward to driving it. Any suggestions or ideas from the group are appreciated. I’ve requested Gordys throw on a new set of props to test before having mine balanced. Waiting to hear if this is an option.

Sounds like you have checked everything that I would have checked. I would definitely try different props.

Does the vibration change when in a turn?

Good plan as any true F will answer that.
Curious did they scann it for miss fire? Just a thought as I assume they would.

I’ll check if they scanned for misfires. Didn’t get that exact statement. More of a, all spark plugs looked good and no sign of an issue but we changed them anyway to be sure.

No change in turns; All remains the same. Was kind of leaning towards power steering potentially?

Have someone drive the boat while you lay next to the engine! LOL. Lots of room in there.

Are you saying leaning isn’t enough?

LOL...leaning is good. Now you need to do the confirming! Is the boat in the water and do you have easy access to it?

Swap the props first. Go from there.

Have you done a video with good audio with the engine hatch open to show what the noise is like? You can post it up. Might help.

Engine sounds normal and overall feels normal. Here is a video at 6.3mph of steering wheel shaking which can be felt through the boat. Also added a video of my hand on the shifter at same speed.

Does it change with trim in different spots.

That’s what I thought maybe also. Of course that checked out ok according to technician. The newborn fell right asleep with all the shaking for his first ride this morning.

Trim level does not seem to change it all that much. I think I’m going to drop it back off at the dealer today. They can have it until it’s fixed.

That's is some crazy vibration. Can you make a video with the engine hatch open while someone else drives the boat?
