What is the purpose of this compartment?

Between the ski locker and fuel tank access door. Drains to bilge with a removable plug. Is it just a drain?

We’re going with that—place to stow wet towels, swimwear etc. It is the wrong shape for a cooler (though, respect to anyone who uses it for that!). Also looks like maybe a good place to base a cover support pole during storage.

Thinking to replace the ratty carpeted hatch with a teak door matching the ski compartment. A next year project is getting all the carpet out of the cockpit and replace with SeaDek or something similar.

LOL
When we opened it up there was an empty Bud Light bottle and a disgusting accumulation of filth and grime at the bottom.
That Magic Eraser gave its life scrubbing some of the stains off the sides of the well.
It'll make a good place to put wet towels etc. Beverages go in a cooler in the bow, need more room than this and helps balance the weight. 8-)

It is a weird place for a cooler because all the crud and water would end up in the drinks. I think we used it for old towels also.

Made a teak hatch cover for the *wet laundry compartment* by cutting down and modding a 24x14 teak bath platform from Lowe's (about $100). Finished it with 4 coats of StarBrite teak oil left from restoring the original Cobalt ski compartment door (also in pictures). The plastic compartment liner was weakly pop-riveted to the frame, so replaced those with heavy gauge stainless screws. Weatherstripped the flat side of opening and vertical surfaces of the long sides for secure fit. Mrs. was pretty pleased with this little upgrade.

Thanks - realized if it didn't look 'factory' it would look janky and since it's literally in the center of the cockpit that wouldn't work. I looked around online until I found a pre made piece that was close to fitting the opening, so it wouldn't be - or look - home-made.
