Sea water filters

I recently saw a reference on you tube to a sea water filter. They made it sound like standard equipment on newer boats. Mine is a 2001 206. They seem easy enough to install but on the other hand, the boat has lived this long without one. Anyone have experience with sea water filter units?

The big boys with big engines run them. You can if you want it can only help right!

Sea strainers are good practice for use in sandy, silty waters and where seaweed may be an issue. Keeps particles from clogging the internal water passages. Cobalt usually installs them ahead of ancillary systems, i.e. AC units, gensets, head, etc. but I've never seen one ahead of their engines.
