New Intakes and a New Product Line I am Building
Posted: Fri Apr 15, 2022 3:33 pm
Posting this in my Cobalt groups first.
I have been building marine and automotive parts here and there for many years. Everything from simple metal fabrication, to wiring harnesses, manifolds, fuel system components, exhaust and intake components, performance parts, to much more complex systems as well. But it has always been mostly one-off custom projects. Over the last year I have been working on formalizing trademark applications, building manufacturing relationships, and narrowing the focus on products that make sense for producing in batches to drive cost down and still control quality.
This is my first product under the LXCESS brand, and there will be more to come. I am always open to feedback and would love to hear your opinions, questions, and ideas for other products.
This intake system is what some of you have seen me post about which I previously used to build utilizing a K&N marine flame arrestor. It was a good solution. But I wanted to improve it and also have more control over the design and quality. I had my own purpose built marine flame arrestor built which integrates an internal stepped bell-mouth to reduce air sound and turbulence. I had our own marine filter socks built which provide additional filtration without any restriction, and can be easily popped off and cleaned without removing the flame arrestor or intake. And also had our own multilayer high temperature silicone couplers built, and spec's our own stainless steel clamps as well.
Initially this setup will be available for a few engine configurations that I have been able to confirm fitment on. Additional configurations may be available in the future. I will also be making the flame arrestor & sock available as a standalone items.
FAQ:
Q: When can I buy it? A: I will have them listed and available within the next 2-4 weeks.
Q: Where can I buy it? A: I am not setting up any sort of e-commerce site and want to keep logistics as simple as possible, they will be available to order on Amazon along with Prime shipping options.
Q: How much will these cost? A: They will be the same as before at a cost of $225, with free Prime shipping, purchased on Amazon. I will run a special coupon code for the folks here for the first 30 days for $40 off which will bring it to $185 just to move some inventory since I have several hundred in this first batch.
Q: Where are you located? A: I was raised in and still live in Austin, TX. Been here for 40yrs and itching to move to Florida at some point
Q: You can't run a car air filter on a boat. A: This is not an automotive air filter. This is a purpose built marine flame arrestor built to USCG SAE-J-1928 standards.
Q: Is this a "cold air intake"? A: No, there is no cold air to be had in a marine engine bay (bilge). This intake reduces restriction, enables better air flow, adds better air filtration to lengthen the life of your piston rings, is easily serviceable/cleanable, and reduces the air "whooshing" sound that some owners experience.
Q: Which engines does it fit? A: Volvo Penta and Mercruiser engines that have a front facing throttle body coming off of the intake manifold. This is mainly the Mercruiser 7.4 MPI and the VP 8.2gsi, and other engines using similar intake manifold and throttle body positioning will work as well.
Q: I have one of those engines, will it fit my boat? A: You need some room between the front of your engine and the engine cover/lid. Approximately 10-12 inches. I will have an exact measurement posted soon.
Q: Is there a warranty? A: Yes, 1 year warranty against defects or unexpected parts failure
Q: Are the clamps steel or stainless steel? A: The clamps provided are all stainless steel.
Q: Can I buy the flame arrestor and filter sock to run on my own boat, offroad vehicle, dune buggy, car, or my own intake I built? A: Yes, the flame arrestor and filter sock will be available separately. It has a 4" lip and will fit on any 4" OD tubing or directly on a 4" throttle body.
Q: Can you make something like this for my engine? or, Can you build XYZ for my boat? A: Send me a personal message and I will add to the list of product requests. A: I have several that are on the list but I am always open to building parts if there is a demand for them.
