I’m the lucky owner of Dudley’s flagpole. Thanks again Dudley!

I’m getting ready to drill a big hole at an angle to get this thing installed. My plan right now is to install the flagpole mount without 4200. I don’t foresee much, if any, water getting into the mount. And a small amount of water getting in would just drain right to the bilge.

Personally I would use caulk, not a lot, but just enough to seal everything up. I am anxious to see how this turns out, planning to put a flag on my R5 and this might be a little more economical alternative the Cobalt or Tigtech flagpole.

I finally got around last Sunday to installing the SeaLux flagpole mount that I bought from Dudley. The mount is SeaLux SL0344SAB and is listed at $68.75 on their website. The flagpole is SeaLux SL0343SFP and costs $64.75.

The picture below is from the SeaLux website where they say you need to drill a 1-1/4” hole. They lie. I measured the diameter of the widest portion of the flagpole mount at around 1.310”, which is considerably larger then the claimed 1.250” hole. A 1-3/8” holesaw at 1.375” should be just about perfect and give me some wiggle room in case I don’t get the 30 degree angle just right.

Guess who has two different holesaw sets that have a 1-1/4” and a 1-1/2”, but no 1-3/8”? I’m running behind schedule so I stop at the local Ace Hardware to pick up the elusive 1-3/8” holesaw. They have one in stock, but it is a Milwaukee that costs $13. Then I have to spend another $20 to get the special Milwaukee arbor. So now I am over $35 out the door just to drill one stupid hole.

This is a picture I found online of a 240 with a factory installed flagpole.

The picture below is from the SeaLux website. I was pretty worried about drilling with a holesaw at an angle. The last thing I wanted was for the holesaw to get squirrelly and leave unintended gouges in the gelcoat. I did a test cut at home in some plywood and found that if you had a good start with the pilot bit, then the pilot bit would stabilize the holesaw nicely as long as you didn’t go gonzo on the drilling pressure.

I started with a pilot hole drilled perpendicular to the gelcoat surface.

After getting the perpendicular pilot hole drilled, I came in at 30 degrees from perpendicular with the pilot drill/holesaw combo and took it slow as the holesaw started cutting into the fiberglass.

Here I have drilled and chamfered the holes for the bolts. I have some gelcoat chipping on the large hole that will not be seen later.

No hardware came with the SeaLux mount or flagpole. 1/4-20 x 1” stainless steel oval headed machine screws fit nicely on the flagpole mount. I’m not super thrilled with the slotted heads on these and would have preferred Phillips, but it was what Ace Hardware had on hand.

Here is a view from underneath before the bolt holes had been drilled. I was able to use a larger washer than standard on the aft end of the mount, but the limited room on the bow side of the mount meant using a standard washer size. I had thought about using some kind of backing plate to give some support for the fiberglass, but the fiberglass is 3/8 “ thick and is very strong.

After all that drilling into gelcoat and fiberglass, I discover that there is not any hardware to attach the flag to the flagpole, even though both the flagpole and the flag are from SeaLux. Very disappointing to get to this point and having to hold the flag with my hand.

I call SeaLux and ask if they forgot any hardware, and they say nope, just go and buy some stainless steel carabiners And so a couple of days later I have this.

I’m pleased with how this little project turned out. But those metal carabiners have got to go, I could only stand the racket they made for only a minute or two, I’m going to try using zip ties to attach the flag to the flagpole next time I go out.
