Stupid Kill Switch question

My 2007 Cobalt 212 has a kill switch under the dash (pic below). The metal piece that the lanyard hooks on to doesnt move at all....it just a metal piece that comes down. Im assuming you hook the lanyard around that but how does the kill switch activate? My kid was using the boat and it just cut out when going about 15mph and wont restart (it has power, the gauges are normal, and the engine sounds like it wants to start but just wont turn over). So im wondering if he somehow hit the kill switch or if there was some wiring with the kill switch and if there was a way I could"reset it" to see if that was the problem. I know its a long shot, but i cant figure out what else it would be. We just had it serviced and put it into the water so the oil, spark plugs, etc are all good. So im trying to figure out where to start..ha

Use a key or another small metal object and pry the switch portion out. Put the loop end of the lanyard over (under? around?) the flip switch and push it back such that when you yank on the lanyard, it pulls the switch forward, killing the engine if the lanyard wearer gets yeeted from the driver's seat. Always wear the lanyard.
The other problem that might prevent a restart is not being in neutral. Rock the throttle/gear shift back and forth and get it back to neutral.

Thanks so much for the info, very much appreciated! Hmmm, so it must not be the kill switch because it is pushed back and not forward. Yea, its definitely in neutral as well. So much for the easy fixes, haha. Not sure what else would just make it shut down suddenly and then not restart. Im kind of at square one...hmmmm

there was a single beep after the engine cut out...not sure if that means anything specific. I cant find any "beep code" online for the Volvo Penta 5.7gxi

To close this out in case anyone else has this issue after a month of troubleshooting....unfortunately the computer chip in the engine went out. And of course Volvo has that part overpriced at $2200 right now. The engine only has 300 hours on it. I hope this doesnt happen to anyone else!

Ugh! Sorry to read this is such an expensive fix. It's too bad you can't find a salvage engine to pull the ECM off of to replace it with. I did that with a car once and it worked just fine. There are many more salvaged car engines than VP engines though. Good luck and thanks for the diagnostic info.

Yea been trying to find a salvage engine part one somewhere. Found one in texas but they wanted $1700 and a new one is $2200....so I figured for an extra $500 I might as well go new. Such a bummer with so few hours on the engine...ugh!
