VP 380 Oil TEMP

I have a 2017 Cobalt R5 with a VP 380, the oil TEMP holds around 180 when at 1250 RPM's but when at or above 3000 RPM's it spikes to 250 (within minutes). When slowing back to lower RPM the temp drops quickly. the engine temp, oil pressure all stay within normal limits. I have had the impeller replaced and the oil is fresh and full. is it possible for oil to heat up and cool down that quickly? maybe a faulty sensor?

Completely normal.

230 - 260 is the normal range. If any thing above I would think the engine would go into a limp mode mode or shut down.

I doubt it would for oil temp. If oil temp got VERY high, that would be caused by elevated coolant temps which is what would set it into a limp mode condition.

thanks for the responses.....I just found it hard to believe that oil could increase/decrease in temp by 80 degrees in a matter of 3-5 minutes...

Is the oil temp guage something introduced on the newer VP's that have the Garmin screens? That's a nice thing to have. We always watch coolant temp, but oil is really the front line in cooling an engine?

You can configure a gauge to display oil temp. Like any of the gauge displays you need to go through your choices. I have mine on a second page. It missed the cut on the primary page.

That's nice, I have the actual guages that have the small LCD display at the bottom. I can view quite a few things, but not oil temp.

So glad you found us med....

Normally the oil pump sucks the oil up from the bottom of the pan and then through an oil filter...then through an oil cooler, and finally back to the motor to lubricate the bearings. WOT will normally temp (for oil) in the low to mid 200's for your engine. Idling and wake zones will be around 150 to 180ish. As long as you have good oil pressure there is no cause for concern.

Any pics of your Cobalt?

And welcome aboard mate.

My 2023 R8 Surf Volvo 430 goes to 280 degrees on WOT, I reported this to the dealer and they said it has an alarm in case something is wrong, which there isn't. He exactly said, "no alarm, no problem." In my experience it's too high for oil temp.

I wonder where they're pulling that temp from? From all the dyno time Ive had its pretty hard to get oil temp that high without the engine temp also going up. These engines dont have long stroke or terrible oil pans/systems that will add to high oil temp.

That is where mine reads. R5 VP350. Mine is displayed on a second template. The primary template displays water temp and oil pressure.
