cleaning

Post by juddmyers »

Just bought a new to me 262. My first boat.. looking forward to the spring.

The metal emblems on the side of the boat are greenish, what do you use to clean them? I tried an AL polish last night and it didn't seem to do a thing.
Also looks like it has brown stains from sitting on a lift, anything good to use to get those clean? I bought the hull cleaner from walmart but so far i have not been impressed.

Hello juddmyers. Welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us! Great group of enthusiasts here.

What year is your 262? We just sold ours and now own a 263. The 2000-2007 series were fantastic hull designs with amazing possibilities on the water. Very versatile.

If the emblem is metal, a good chrome cleaner will shine them up. If it is chrome coated plastic, well that's a different story. Any pictures you can provide will help.

Are you using any type of machine buffer on the hull? Cobalt gel coat is known for cleaning up incredibly well using the correct methods. A 3M hull cleaner with a dual action orbital buffer will certainly take the brown stains out. The Starbrite brand hull cleaner from Walmart will only do so much as you mentioned.

You may find this thread helpful:

Feel free to introduce yourself in a new thread if you so desire. We love hearing how folks get into Cobalt boats.

Again, hope you stay awhile and Welcome aboard!

Thanks!

she is a 2001 262.

The side emplem does feel metal, i don't think it is plastic. I tried one polish and it did nothing... i'll look for a better one.
I have not used any buffer at all.. was scared to. Didn't want to damage it.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the 262! Depending on how dark and old the stains are muriatic acid does a good job of removing stains. Just be careful with it. I have had good luck with foaming hull cleaner from walmart. Again this is just for normal stains from a weekend or so. My boat doesn't sit in the water. Post a pic of the stains that will help. The emblems can be replaced if they are that bad. Any cobalt dealer can get you the emblems.

AWESOME! Welcome to the 260 series club, juddmyers! 8-) 8-) 8-)

If the emblem on the side looks like this, it's plastic and a new one can be ordered from a dealer.

If it's an oval one with recessed letters, it's most likely metal. Someone may have added that. It should shine up.

You gotta post a pic of your "new to you" 262! They are so sexy lookin'. 8-) 8-)

It is the first pic, so i guess it is plastic. Just by touch, i thought it wasn't. It looks just like the first one and has "Cobalt" right besite it. I'll try to get a pic of it tonight.

Welcome...

Yellowish- brown marbled hull stains at water line and below?... this is the best..The company also offers a "hull Cleaner" for blackened type stains but this stuff is incredible)
Then follow up with this Polimer wax.. Ever wax your hull?? it sucks but makes a difference as your yellow wont show up

Some people will wet sand if the boat is really bad (e.g., start with 800 grit, sand again with 1500 grit), but if you can get it shiny with a buffer and 3M (or Meguiar's) buffing compound and a random-orbit polisher you'll have an easier time and remove less gelcoat from the boat.

For compound, I like something like this, which comes in heavy, medium, and finishing weights or grits:
http://3mmarine.com/products/compounds- ... 36102.html

If you're serious about it, the Flex forced orbit polisher is a bit higher end (the Flex 3401 is $300-400), and is a bit easier to get a good result with than a random orbit like the Porter Cable 7424 at $120. I have the Porter Cable, and found it a good middle-of-the-road compromise.

Yes...those are plastic made to look like metal. Your local Cobalt dealer can order the letters and emblem for ya' . They carry them all the way back to 1971. BigBlockPower here is close to a premier Cobalt dealer--Gordy's Marine in WI. He was able to obtain an "L" for me that was missing. You can PM him and he may be able to help you out in that department.

Btw, when you attach your rear fender while docking, place the top of it below the emblem and letters so it does not rub them. Helps to preserve them a little longer. Probably what happened to our "L".

I think i am just going to take it to a guy and let him fully detail it and see what happens. I would bet the brown on mine has been there a while. Looks like it would match up to the runners on a dry lift.

It should come out for sure JM. It will just take a little elbow grease.

Ask that they don't run the buffer over all the screw heads & emblems otherwise you have a buildup of cream colored wax stuffed in the little nooks and crannies. Had my nephews, neices, and kids accomplish the painstaking job of digging it out with toothpicks and rags. Love slave labor! :D

Most yellow stains don't polish out.... your a spray bottle away from stardom!!

Spray.. wait 15 seconds.. disappear..!! That easy!!

Hard part is applying sealant so it won't come back for a season..
