Adjust Steering Wheel

Post by fsts2k »

Do Cobalts (R8) have an ability to adjust the steering wheel center position? My new boat is a few degrees off center when the boat is going straight.

So glad you found us Kevin.

Yes they do. It can be a bear the first time to pull off the spline but once done it’s not too difficult.

Any pics?

And welcome aboard mate.

Great, thank you!

Any idea how to get to the steering wheel out? On my old nautique there was a plastic plug which was friction fit into the center hole. I would then remove the center nut and pull the wheel off the spline. The R8 appears to have an upholstery center section. I didn’t see an obvious way to remove that part.

No pics in the water yet, will get some this weekend. Here it is out of the water.

I have an 2022 R8 surf with same issue. Not a big deal but if it's an easy fix I'd like to know as well.

I was interested in this too...for mr 2018 R7. Mainly to find straight at no wake speed or docking. But I did a 2 hr round trip today and I noticed when on plane, the wheel is straight (spokes at 10, 2, and 6...center logo correct). At idle speed going straight has the wheel to the left (spokes at 12, 8, & 4...logo top facing left)

Im puzzled. I assume the electronic steering has something to do with it....but straight should be straight. I've only had the boat for three weeks and about 6 hrs, so still figuring it out.

Has anyone added the rudder indicator from vp?

My dealership did an alignment and got the wheel straight, unfortunately they didn't show or tell me the process. It was straight for a bit, now it appears to have drifted.

My expectation is that the wheel does move at different speeds based on prop rotation and torque so straight at high speed is different than straight at lower speed. My direct drive boats act this way, the rudder needs to be turned a bit at different speeds.

I would still like to learn the alignment process.

Do you have a photo of your wheel? There may be a few hex head bolts that come off, or a cover, and then you can remove a center nut and pull the wheel. Others might have a cap that pops off - here's a video of one with a cap

Thanks, that is how I could get to the Nautique center bolt.
