Hi all,

Twin 496mag HO’s. All systems good. Contemplating taking boat in for 500hr service. Aside from DIY for oil/gear lube, impellers, and fuel filters, I was wondering what proactive maintenance steps I could/should take at 500hrs. What parts might need attention? Do I risk fixing what isn’t broke?

I inquire feedback b/c who wants to take a great working boat in for service……with fear it might mess up a good thing. I will pull the manual and read……but looking for any experience mariners who have met and surpassed the 500hr mark on twin 496mag HO’s.

I prefer the PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE approach, but then again I do all my own work. However, if you are going to have a shop do the work I would use the boat until problems arise. You will definitely create problems having someone else put their hands on your boat and in your case X2 with two motors.

Pull drives. Check gimbal bearing and U-joints. Check bellows, alignment, cooling lines, etc.

As long as you have been doing the 100hr/annual maintenance items like fluid changes, pulling the drives at least every other year and inspecting and replacing the water pump impellers, there really is not anything special about 500hrs. Just keep doing what you are doing as long as things pass the inspections and continue to operate correctly.

If the plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor have never been replaced I would do that along with possibly the belts.
If the bellows have never been replaced, I would also take a close look at them - the maintenance cycle on those can be all over depending on where/how the boat is operated. Mine in a dry stored freshwater boat have easily lasted 10-15yrs. But a moored salt water boat might not even see 5yrs.
If the boat is 10+ years old and especially if you run ethanol fuel, I would inspect and possibly replace the fuel lines.

Other than this, I am a stickler for maintenance on a schedule, but careful to not fix what isn't broken. I tend to keep boats a long time and have had several with higher hours and still running just fine with routine maintenance and the occasional repair - I replaced the circulating water pumps in all of the below engines in the 500+ range. The bellows and fuel lines in the 185 were replaced at 15yrs - that's the only boat I have ever replaced the bellows in.

1999 SeaRay 185 - 850hrs
2000 SeaRay 290 - 500hrs
1979 Correct Craft - 1800hrs!

Yo Captain "Action Andy" 282! Props to you for being on top of your boat game. When it comes to hitting that 500hr mark on your twin 496mag HO's, it's all about staying ahead of the game. Besides the routine stuff you're already doing, consider checking out the spark plugs, belts, hoses, and any electrical connections for wear and tear. It's all about preventin' problems down the line and keeping your ride smooth. Better to be safe than sorry, right? Keep being proactive, bro, and your boat will thank you for it!
