Getting new dash panels at technographics. Changing out all gauges and switches while I’m at it.
I need help with the 3-position light switch. I can’t seem to find a replacement. It’s a Carling 9947. To me, looks like 4 separate poles but with 6 total tabs. I don’t know if this is SPDT or what. Wiring is a bit messy.
Appreciate any help finding the right switch. Thanks!

PS wish I could figure out how to add photos. Always get the yellow triangle when trying to upload.

Is this for the anchor/navigation lights or the interior lights?

Chaos, I've never seen the yellow triangle or I'd try to help troubleshoot it. Asking you to post a picture of it seems like a bad idea, but any info you can provide will help me figure it out.

What you have pictured is a DPDT (Double Pole - Double Throw) toggle switch. My boat uses a Carling G-Series 2GM51-73 toggle switch for the anchor/navigation lights. I don’t think the 9947 means anything.


You can find this switch at Digikey and Mouser, but Amazon appears to have the lowest price right now at $11.67. You can find less expensive switches than Carling but I have not experienced a Carling switch failure so far on my boat.

Thanks! Can you explain the wiring? Looks like 6 tabs but three are tied together. Would I just run jumper wire on a new switch?

Yes, you would need to install jumpers between terminals 3 and 4 and between terminals 2 and 6. The diagram was borrowed from the internet.

And bigger question, any wiring diagrams out there specifically for the switch panels? I have found one for the gauges, like a generic Mercruiser wiring diagram. But can't find one for the switches.

I’ve got more to say about that wiring diagram, including the empty tab, but am short on time right now.

Do you have any pics of where you took out the switch panel? My switch panel looks like it was pre-wired at a bench as all of the switch wires are very short and terminate in two or three multi-wire connectors. Then the guys on the factory floor could grab the switch panel and connect everything up by plugging in those two or three connectors to matching connectors under the dash. Maybe your 2000 used the same method as my 2007?

Have you tried calling Cobalt and asking for the wiring diagrams? I have the diagrams for my 2007 from the factory, but that happened a long time ago.

Ok, that is nasty. No wonder you are replacing everything. Is that just age or is salt water involved?

Here is a picture of my fuse panel where you can see the two multi-wire connectors I was talking about. Also those black spade connectors shown are really nice in that the connector locks onto the spade terminal if you just pull on the wire.

Regarding the factory wiring diagrams; while the forum is super helpful and friendly it doesn’t have any 2000 190 wiring diagrams. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Yours looks a little neater than mine!
I think I have pieces enough together via various online resources. The color codes seem to be shared across many boat types especially with Mercury power.
