Volvo Penta DP-SM outdrives

I asked in a previous post about cleaning up these drives and painting them. I also need to replace the anodes, but there is wildly conflicting information on what type, zinc, aluminum or magnesium I should use.

I am in the Great Lakes, and have a 2003 293 with the galvanic isolator system. When we are not on the boat, it sits in the marina attached to shore power.

Much of the info I have read states that magnesium is the choice for freshwater, but with the system above might be considered overkill.

Any and all help is appreciated, Cobalt Chat Family :)

I would be talking with Volvo dealers/mechanics that are familiar with the Great Lakes.

Painting alone is a complex process - the standard painting is several layers of different materials, each designed for a different purpose. You have the benefit of being in fresh water instead of salt water, but marinas with shore power still tend to have stray currents here and there that cause more corrosion than isolated docks. Bruce's advice to talk with a local expert familiar with Volvo outdrives makes good sense to me.

Drives cleaned up, primed and painted. Not terrible to be honest.
